Zambia gives Zim company $5m coal deal
Zimbabwe’s main coal producer Hwange Colliery Company said Tuesday it had won a contract to supply US$5 million worth of the commodity to Zambia.
This is despite Zambia having a coal mine at Maamba in southern province not very far from Zimbabwe.
An official of the Hwange Colliery Company said the deal was struck recently at an International Trade Fair in the Zambian city of Ndola.
He said shipments to Zambia would start immediately, and prospects were bright f or further supply deals beyond the current contract.
Hwange Colliery Company, which is listed on the Zimbabwe and Johannesburg stock exchanges, is the country’s biggest coal producer and exports to a number of countries.
It has coal reserves running into billions of tonnes.
Mamba coal mine has largelyt been neglected by government apart from pronouncements that it is looking for an investor

If our local coal mine can not meet the demand, then end users have to import this product. All we can question is what is happening with our coal mine?
Tell me, which country is now a sinking titanic? Zim or Zed?
Hwange company is a well known and serious company than our Maamba that has failed us. Give us more details to countercheck the value of the mine. But Mugabe will definately support RB in his quest for leadership,….
This is not news. Many companies in Zambia already import coal either fropm Zim or SA. With full of ignorant people this site is absolutely nonsense.
last time Levy imported maize from SA despite Zed having a surplus. u will be suprised, maybe that coal is actually worth less than $3mil. there is so much corruption in this importation business.
The question is who initiated the deal? Was it the Zim company or the Zed government? And what has stopped Maamba Collieries from doing the same? Is the coal at Wankie of the same grade as that at Maamba? These are some of the questions I could only ask so that I do not right-away accuse someone of wrongdoing.
these are upsetting contracts nowonder u find that our country is not developing, obviusly if u follow this deal u gonna find that some politician has got a cut in it. why not offer the contract to mamba coal mine.
ZW u did not specify whether this contract is betwn zambian gov or some private co. but still such businesses should not be allowed as wealth is actually leaving tha country at the expense of the few beneficiallies to that contract.
i wish ZW could digout ho contracted with the zim co.
Hmmm is it because Rupiah is Zimbabwean hahaha. Ok let us please put the joking aside. How can our government empower a foreign company when we have companies in Zambia that can meet the demands of supplying coal. This government is missing the fact that spending the money on local business eventually makes it flow back to them in the form of taxes, both on the produce and the people who will be employed as a result. Am sure some one is getting a hefty bribe some where the line. Instead they want to beg and plead for hand outs from foreign countries. One thing those in government fail to realise is that just as an individual person who relies on credit to survive, we as a country will never succeed if we continue on this path.
