Zambian convicted of bigamy in UK (Nawa reacts)

Nawa

An Addiscombe bigamist who had THREE wives has escaped a jail term today (Friday).

Nawa Sibongo, who worked for the Metropolitan Police, was given a nine-month suspended sentence today at Croydon Crown Court.

The 47-year-old, who once harboured dreams of standing for Parliament in his native Zambia, told the Advertiser after the hearing that he accepted his punishment.

He said: “It was regrettable. I think it will be a lesson learned.

“I don’t want to cause my wives any more distress.

“I think the judge summed it up pretty well, I don’t think I’ve been treated unfairly.”

He was still married to the mother of three of his children, Chipo Sibongo, when he walked down the aisle with Amina Abdul and moved into a flat in Addiscombe in April 2008.

The court heard that the marriage was never consummated because Sibongo, a devout Christian, refused to convert to Islam.

Just five months after the marriage at Croydon Register Office, he married wife number three, Lucy Mkango, in north London.

Sibongo – who is now not with any of the three women – was given a four-month suspended sentence for the first count of bigamy, and nine months for the second, to run concurrently.

The sentence was suspended for two years.

Judge Simon Pratt said: “Bigamy remains a most serious offence, for two very sound reasons.

“Firstly, it’s an offence which seeks to undermine the importance of the continuing value of marriage in our society.

“Secondly, it involves the betrayal of innocent parties who put their trust and love into someone who’s no more than deceiving them in a cynical way.”

He continued: “The offence must be marked with sentences of imprisonment.

“I’d be failing in my duty if I failed to do otherwise.

“However, I’ve been persuaded that I can just properly suspend the inevitable sentences of prison in your case.”

Below is a comment (reaction) by Nawa Sibongo as posted on the Watchdog:

I wish first and foremost apologise to the embarrassment this may have caused to any Zambian but most of all my children.

I however wish to make a correction this is an old story that seems to be doing the rounds based[on] malice. the case was expunged over a month ago and to portray it as breaking news is false.

I am unable to go into details but the reporting from the Croydon Advertiser where this story is derived from was not fully factual but written in a sensational manner.

I am in no way proud of what transpired but one day I will be able to give the full details as at now, I would like to start rebuilding my life and my children’s future. I will however not hide for I made a mistake in life and if others have been privileged to live life without error well good luck to them and I take off my hat to them.

While I do not agree with the way the story has been run on this site I will always fight to the death for your freedom to report issues but please lets be factual about issues.

Iwe kwete, you must be in the same position with the randy boy or you are him masquerading as kwete. This man’s behaviour is shameful and reporters can not be blamed.Since you have talk time, why don’t you talk to him and teach him to conduct himself properly. Shameful person

  2. Chiti says:

Kwete, when did yo become a journalism teacher? The truth is the truth whether said by one person or four. But one do you keep on coming to a site which you don’t like?

  3. Kwete says:

It seems the habit of reporting half backed stories is a problem with the media in Zambia could it be that you hard no talk time to get Nawas position on the matter before publishing??? its called both sides of the story

Since i came to this site i have seen stories which are very questionable, published just to get a story out there, but seriously you should make an effort to contact all persons involved in the story before publishing that is not to say you ask for there approvel but to have both sides story.

  4. Kalyolyo says:

Ala fingi filecitika namuno mwine mu ZED. Its just that many more cases have not been brought to light and you will be amazed rather shocked to learn so many cases even more serious than Nawas. Pull yourself togather and Soldier on. If God did not condem anyone, then who can condem you?. Viva Nawa and take more 7 hours if you so wish and look after your children.

  23. Reuben Muzeya says:

God, I am not going to kick a man who is down, you reached a career very highly respectable in the Uk and looking between the lines you have paid very heavily for something as you have indicated much more than anybody else. Your decence in terms of your apologies is what some of us respect. Please build your life up, and me as A Zambian in Uk would still be willing to say , lets talk and support each other, I am happy to talk to you and be willing to say mistaakes have been learnt and can we move forward. To reach what you reached in the UK was not a fluke, you know the better man is the one who falls and lifts himself up. I am in Kent give me a ring on 07989231747. Sometimes that support is required but need to say I am not in a position. I am not going to beat on you while you are down, Lift yourself up mate and based on what you have ahieved in this country learn from that past and move on. Kalunda mwamwba ka luyi mwamwba .Dont worry a bout the few tribal bigots , the Key is ONE ZAMBIA AND ONE NATION and we all in the diaspora know that better. Kaunda regardless of the end left us the most important thing we are one ZAMBIANS

  24. John Zulu says:

Having looked at the comments including Bo Nawa’s comment I would like to clear a few points. First and foremost Bo Nawa was not found guilty he pleaded guilty after agreeing to cooperate with the police and the courts. Secondly there was no scam nor was any application made to immigration this is what made the Judge come to his suspended sentence. At no point did Bo Nawa run three homes he was only foolish not to counter check his paper work and was forced to plead guilty only on technicalities.

I have known Bo Nawa foe the best part of 30 years he has always been a humble respectful person with a deep love for people and Zambia he has always availed himself to help any Zambian in need where he has been able to help. I had the chance to talk to him shortly after the court case and I told him off for the sake of his kids he was deeply remorseful and was more concerned about the embarrassment it caused Zambians which is true to Nawa he has always put others first. I am aware that he is making efforts to rebuild his life.

I know Bo Nawa will continue to be the same person he has always been respectful, helpful and humble I wish him well and I would welcome him with open arms when he is next in Zambia.

  25. Zed patriot says:

ukutemwa mu diaspora, survival skills ka?

  26. Friend says:

I think this was more of a scam that an oversight of brother Nawa. I think the brother was caught up in the “arranged mariages” business which is very common in London and UK in general. The woman pays you to marry her in exchange for immigration documents. If Nawa had bothered to divorce the women he married,, he would have got away with this scam but clearly he did not. Shame brother.

  27. Dark Knight says:

These things don’t just happen as some are saying, he did this twice! Hope he learnt a lesson and turns his life around. No need to go after ZW as this is a story publicly available on the net and was never reported in Zambia although it is a few months old. So this is indeed breaking news. If Nawa still intends to run for office I hope he respects the media’s prying eyes.

  28. Wondering says:

Move on with your life my man. These things happen! By the way you look good and I understand the desperation on the side of the women to get hooked.

  29. Tonga Steel says:

Why are they persecuting my cousin the Lozi Bull, aint nothing wrong to have three wives. being so greed and selfish and yet very had working I have five wives to myself.

  30. Chendenda says:

It the norm. People go out to commit crimes and when journalists expose them, they blame the media. So this Nawa chap may have been checking this website to see if they have picked up the story. And today he obviously had stomach crumps when he saw that it was there. Keep it up watchdog. Watch Zambians in public or private lives. Nawa is a fool. How can he marry three wives in UK? The idiot, he is atypical Zambian policeman. Shame on you. I feel for you children who are probabaly reading this also. You are a let down to your family and country

  31. 50ngwee says:

iwe, nawa awe wachilamo.ninshi kanshi.this is very very embarrassing. What will happen to some of us who want to marry from the diaspora? It is chaps like you and RB who give zambia a bad name. Please,go back to zed and marry impali.

  32. dingi gibbs says:

    simply selfish AND STUPID

  33. THE SAINT says:

Zamlibido is causing embarassment all over the world

  34. Lelo Lelo says:

Bo Nawa, do not blame The Watchdog? If the court found you guilty – then that is the vedict by the court and not anyone else.

The Watchdog is simply reporting. If you want to make any issue, pursue ‘The Advertiser’.

Not an easy issue – pick yourself up and look after your children.

  35. Anonymous says:

A good looking guy like him, i bet he looked real tight in his police uniform the chicks went “arrest me officer.” How could the man resist?

  36. RECYCLED SPOKESMAN says:

I will however not hide for I made a mistake in life and if others have been privileged to live life without error well good luck to them and I take off my hat to them./b>
    ============================================================================

True Mr NAWA, We all make mistakes, I wish you all the best in your rehabilitation especially the future of your Children. May God grant you peace!I will remember you in my prayers!

  37. nkole says:

AWE bane please where are we going to? have we become like our friends from the west of african where anything goes.

NAWA for starters my man how did you get into such a situation? being a metro police and the likes with hopes to be an MP.well you are probably better morally than our lot.

  38. Nawa Sibongo says:

  42. Ba Dr Maureen SC says:

Lozi Bull ! Walasa boyi ! Get some more especially those zambian chicks that get stranded after the ‘greener pastures’ the followed turn grey !

  43. Areaboy says:

There is a bit of hypocrisy on Mr Nawa’s part in this case. He refused to consummate the marriage with Amina because he is a ‘devout Christian’ and yet at the same time he marries again, whilst still married to wife no 1. Very interesting fellow.

  44. Beatrice Mpundu says:

Bane, you are in UK not barotse palins where you can marry like those animals. Check your libido
