ZAWA denies killing missing villager
The Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) has refuted allegations by Ndevu villagers in chief Luwembe’s area in Nyimba district of Eastern Province, that officers killed a villager.
ZAWA Public Relations Officer, Wilfred Moonga said to ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the allegations by the villagers are false and unfounded.
He said his officers did not kill anyone but that while conducting an operation, they noticed some poachers whom they pursued at Kalasha wildlife Game Park and did not at any time kill a villager as claimed by the villagers.
Mr Moonga said the three suspected poachers managed to escape and one of them did not show up at the village which made the villagers to suspect that he was killed by ZAWA officers.
He said it was latter reported that one villager allegedly alerted the others that their colleague had been killed by ZAWA officers and buried him in the bush whilst he was in a tree witnessing the ordeal.
Mr Moonga said the villagers later rose against the officers and set ablaze Kalasha Game park camp before destroying a bridge and other valuables amounting to K95 million.
He said the items destroyed included 200 Ammunitions, fire arms, camp beds, 20 by 50 Bags of maize, cloths and other household goods.
Meanwhile Mr Moonga disclosed that no injuries where recorded adding that the police has since arrested 16 people in connection with the incidents.
Last week, on the September 18, villagers run amok and burnt a ZAWA camp after news went round that officers from ZAWA had killed a villager.
