The issue the pact has to face up to now is exactly how are they going to govern should they win in 2011. Will they govern as a coalition or as a single party? How will the spoils of power be divided as in the various cabinet positions? I think that the Kenya experience has some similarities with what is going on in Zambia now. Kibaki and Odinga got together to oust Moi. When they finally got into power, their partnership fell apart and led to the blood-letting that the country witnessed in 2007 and from which as we speak the country is still trying to recover from. Some analysts think that the fact that the pact has not stated who will be their leader for the next election as being strategic, whereas to me it looks like they are trying to hide things under the carpet and hope for the best. HH has squandered his best asset which is his youth and the fact that he represented a break with the politics of post-colonial Zambia. He represented a new era of politics but he has actually achieved the amazing feat of making Sata look more level-headed and statesmanlike.

the author is most probably one of RBs image builders; trying to portray him as a very good leader and trying to appear neutral by bringing up non entities like Elias Chipimo Jr, does him being a lawyer make him a good politician? plus his links to Bradford Machila are also questionable. the pact is the only alternative to the current rot; Viva Pact and The Post; you are both working towards a common goal.

A house build on sand will fall, but a house built on rock will stand.

The question you should ask your self is how strong is this pact. This 2009, two years away from election day. Can this pact stand the taste of jealousy, politicing, the rise of a new and cleaner political party like Elias Chipimo's of this world, the departure of well founded politicians, the tribal tag that has been labeled on it, the lack of dominance at certain grass root areas for each candidate?

The pact in its glory does look like a saviour of Zambia. But when you ask yourself the very big question is it really a saviour for Zambia. Who is the pact saving, only two regions have and will benefit from this venture. it is believed that Ssouthern (TONGAS) will have a chance at presidency. Northern (BEMBAS)will have chance at presidency, and the rest of ZAMBIA, where do they fall in. Quite alright the WINAS of this world have been brought in, brought into the pact or brought into PF? Which party of the two remains solid, which party is really benefitting from this union.

Reports in southern prvince, indicate that quite a number of the MP's will soon follow Chizyuka's root, infact the people have identified four others who may be leaving this venture, cheifs are worried and continue to call for a reconciliation in the UPND. If this cmes to pas, that will be six constituencies gone, so what strong hold does HH bring to the table.

By the year 2011, two things will happen, and mark my words they will, a stronger party will surface, a more democratic party that will open room for proper democratic principles, and governance and not this new hooligan and dictatorial style of leadership we see in HH and sata today. This party will collect all of PF and UPND's loose ends, and will rise to the challenge, and this party will indeed be the saviour that the people of zambia are calling for. after all politicians do jump ship the history is very clear on that one.

As someone said earlier, perharps this rushed into union by HH will indeed be the ends of his political hopes and aspirations, and perhaps finally the old man will retire and gracefully allow new blood to pump into the political body. Perhaps finally Zambia will move away from politics driven by emotional, lack of analysis , full of insults, and no proper agenda.

All we can say for now is we wish the pact well, but the there is a storm coming that will sweep away the sand the pact is built on.

Max,

Interesting experience, what about us villagers who would rather remain dressed in our traditional regalia? Will they be able to stand our animal dung altered body smells.

'pretty elitist one, what with wine drinking, whisky sipping, bow-tie wearing snobs' eh eh!

From the look of things, Elias Chipimo's party is going to be a pretty elitist one, what with wine drinking, whisky sipping, bow-tie wearing snobs like Patrick Chisanga, Charles Milupi, Willa Mungomba!

Believe you me, even with my Ivy League PhD, I was one time snubbed by this Elias Chipimo guy at a social gathering presumably because I just didn't fit in his type of crowd. I was in my usual t-shirt and cap and he had what appeared like a Pierre Cardin suit with with some gold cuff links. He pretended not to remember me even though I had known him at UNZA when he was a law student and I was a lecturer there. Apart from that, I had previously been introduced to him on two occasions by one of his close relatives.

How are guys like this going to sync with the chibuku - drinking grassroots populations of Misisi and Kapoto where the votes are?

This critic is biased towards MMD. He has completely ignored the numerous problems in his party. This should be Jere writing, the tone is familiar. He is suggesting that UPND should be own its own so that they enjoy calling it a tribal party. The author has also ignored numerous resignations from MMD eg Sondashi, Moonga and wife, Chuumbwe,GBM and others but concentrated on some UPND members like Bob Sichinga who left the party before Mazoka's death. If there is a party that has suffered defections is first MMD, but PF chased its rebels, UPND expelled its secretary general for selling party secreties the way Mumbi of PF did. By the way who told you that HH is a dictator! Foolish reasoning, of all the party leaders Banda, Sata, HH, Miyanda, Siluapwa, Mwila, Sodashi and other numerous tutemba parties, HH seem to be more democratic. That Chizuka of yours cannot hold the party at ransom, if he is that popular why did he challenge his expulsion, the answer is he cannot win without UPND support. What surprises me is the way MMD is worried about the pact. First it was Katele who was advising UPND after scopping 16 local gov't elections that it is now strong, and that it should stand own its own and reject the pact, then someone in Eastern Province confessed that they were worried about the pact, and that their pact is with Zambians, later Kunda was in Monze saying HH has sold them to Sata, now the author of this article is suggesting to us that the pact is not the solution. What a concidence! The author also said that most of the scandles happened under Mwanawasa, may I be reminded when was the Dora Saga, Chiluba Saga? VIVA PACT, LONG LIVE PROGRESSIVE ZAMBIANS!

How come the author seem to be be too critical with the opposition but soft on MMD?. Next time Mr author please try using the middle lane, you intentionally forgot the scandals that has dogged RB's one year reign, you've intentionally forgotten to remind the readers that we are currently on autopilot and that the only thing looking up at the moment is the Presidential jet's mileage. You rightly pointed out luck of policy/ideology direction with the pact but have listened to RB and his wife George recently? its all waffling, they are content in rebutting what Sata is saying instead of making policy statements at their recent rallies. Otherwise good try.
