Supporters association doubts Chipolopolo for AFCON

All National Team Supporters (ANTS) Interim Secretary Bob Kayukwa says the 2010 African Cup of nations (AFCON ) are quite fair.

Kayukwa told ZANIS Sports in an interview , today, that the draws are fair but expressed doubt at the the strength and caliber of the national team.

” The draws are fair but looking at the calibre and the lack of knowledge of the quality Zambian players by the Herve Renard’s coaching bench, Zambia is set for a rude shock at the tournament in Luanda, Angola, ” he said.

As a former Phyiscal trainer for Ghana’s Black Stars and a former defender as a player himself, Renard’s knowledge about African soccer is limited, the ANTS Interim Secretary said.

The ANTS interim Secretary noted the dropping of Swiss based Isaac Chansa and Andrew Sinkala who is based in Germany and the non inclusion of Angolan based players such as Harry Milanzei, Dube Phiri, Ian Bakala and the Tana brothers, Noel and Tana , among others will have a telling effect.

He added that Renard’s leaving out of Zambia’s latest soccer export to France Jonas Sakuwaha adds more salt to the injury.

He reasoned that tournament such as CECAFA which attracts a hoard of strong East African teams are supposed to serve as quality training grounds for the chipolopolo.

He suggested that the senior national team should be sent to the CECAFA games as it would be an opportunity for training in readiness for the 2010 AFCON games six or so weeks away.

” Herve Renard should take a leaf from the likes of Patrick Phiri, late Ben Bamufuchile, late George Mungwa and Roald Poulson who were quiet illustrous and focused in their approach to the games,” he said.

He said a defender as coach, Renard cannot make a good coach as he needs assistance coach with good Curriculum Vitae.

Zambia is drawn in group D comprising Cameroon, Tunisia and Gabon. Hosts Angola are in group A with Mali, Algeria and Malawi.

Group B has 2010 World Cup qualifiers Ivory Coast and Ghana. Togo and Burkina Faso are in the same group. Reigning 2008 Continental Champions Egypt are drwan in group C together with Nigeria, Benin and Mozambique.

Meanwhile, the ANTS official said his organisation is thankful to the North Korean government for sending its national team to Zambia for a friendly with the Chipolopolos.

Are you telling me the coach can’t find a player or players who can score goals for Zambia among all these names being thrown around? If a coach is unable to identify talent, what does that say about him?

It is normal for fans/people to complain about a coach if they are not getting a ‘return’(results)on their investment. Mind you, these foreign coaches are paid far more than what local coaches get paid for a reason. So that they can bring something different and beneficial to Zambian football. If they can’t perform to expectations or bring/add quality to the ‘TEAM’, why in God’s name do we bother going half way around the world recruiting these people? Why not just stick with local coaches who have been able to achieve in similar circumstances?

By the way, if these foreign coach’s aim is to “build for the future” why then not just recruit them as “soccer academy” coaches? Because I feel that is where “building for the future” is supposed to be taking place. And not necessarily at national team level! The country can’t keep living on promises for ever.

What is the use of paying someone that kind of money (by Zambian standards) if all we get is ‘next time, next time.’ After all coaches are paid for producing results, results, results, and more results. Not as caretakers!!

We have so many good players in Zambia that it is difficult for the coach to make a choice, therefore he normally chooses the recyled players like Mbesuma, Katongo due to public pressure, just like politics, we have so many Presidents and finally we choose recycled materials like RB and next will be Pabwato Cobra. Please ba coach revive our confidence in the team at AFCON, ITS SAD to see journalist in international media just analysing the likes of Ghana, ivory coast, cameroon, nigeria…they dont talk about zambia as if we havent qualified cos. they know we are just completing the table..
