Three former Members of Parliament (MPs) in Eastern province have officially resigned from the former ruling party UNIP to join the opposition Patriotic Front, according to Zanis.
The three are former Chipangali MP, Lucas Phiri, former Chama North MP, John Chibanga and former Malambo MP Imange Muzidya Phiri, who defected alongside former Chipata Mayor, Patrick Chirwa.
In a revelation to ZANIS in Chipata, the three said they decided to join the opposition PF because their former party was dead as it allegedly had no leadership.
The former Chipangali MP, Mr Phiri, said he needed to belong to a party that was thinking of taking the country forward and it was the reason why he decided to join PF.
Mr Phiri observed that he would be doing a disservice to the people of Chipangali constituency, the province and the country if he stuck to UNIP because he needed to be in a party that would help people come out of poverty.
He said he would have loved to join the ruling MMD but alleged that the party lacked leaders who were hard working.
And Mr Chibanga accused the MMD of having failed the people of Chama, especially in the improvement of the road network.
He said people were still crossing crocodile infested streams because of lack of bridges which government has allegedly failed to build.
Mr Chibanga also said the ruling MMD had no policy on agriculture, adding that, the reduction of bags of fertilizer in a packs meant that farmers would fail to produce as expected.
He said Zambian peasant farmers were living as commercial families because they helped a lot of people from their produce at both family and national level.
Mr Chibanga said it was pointless for the ruling party which is in government to start reducing the number of bags in a pack of fertilizer instead of increasing it considering the economic hardships farmers were going through.
And welcoming the defectors, Eastern Province PF chairperson, Solomon Mbuzi, said the PF, together with its sister party, United Party for National Development (UPND), was happy to receive them.
Mr Mbuzi said the four had made right choices because politics should not be about amassing wealth for personal glory like what was allegedly being seen in the ruling party but a service to the people.
hahaha..UNIP..does it still exist?well, lets’ wait and see what happens by 2011..viva pact..its a win..these chaps are timing so they could be picked as candidates ..anyway,u amde the right decision..
I remember Lucas Phiri when he was Chipangali MP, he is quite eloquent
The circus has began positioning oneself for possible adoption to stand as MPs. The same old story of recyle leadership for self glorification. Unfortunately they are even given a heroes welcome (sic)! They are talking about no agriculture policy and no bridges when their party was in power for close to three decades! Oh God help Zambia. We need leaders who are consistent who understand the ideology and policy of their party. What agriculture policy and infrastructure development is PF has apart from pointing wrongs in the policies of MMD and not giving solutions? What about UPND under HH? Nothing has been sold to the Zambian people on agriculture. UPND had policies under Andy Kambela Mazoka and the current leadership of HH can not understand them. The truth is MMD has policies which needs to be refined and supported for us to move as a country. Also MMD needs change some leaders in order to achieve its intended goals. Can the PACT come out and tell us its policies on what KK would say the four human endevours which are shelter, agriculture, health and education. We need to know and see if they make sense! Andy used to produce an alternative budget and policies but alas these to “cobras” are busy spiting on anything. We do not want change for the sake of it NO NO NO! Come 2011 if the PACT continues on its current PATH they will be shocked that MMD will still emerge victotius and as usual they will cry foul. Brg. Godefrey Miyanda, Prof Chirwa, CDP, Chipimo jr and others were are you for the time is now to usher in a crop of new leadership with Zambia as the centre for all activities. The time is now you men!
zioneke continue living in dream land come 2011 you and your party will be out and finished; hope you defect to the pact in good time; the tide for change is blowing furiously
unip!! yaba! havent heard that acronym in a long time! bringz bak memoriz of the 80s
Imange muzidya….mmmm with PF?
Hon. Lucas Phiri welcome to active politics again, just rethink on joining the PACT, our doors are open in MMD and u can bring that change in attitude for hard work, we miss U. I know u fear honourable Vincent Mwale that he might be the prefered candidate under MMD for Chipangali in 2011 as he is the current MP, dont fear the unkown , speak out that i want to be adopted, and i see chance in the pact other than MMD. But we really miss u in parliament , u did alot to the zambian pipo , i wish u well as u hope to bounce back.If u join us we can even float ur name in town if we fin Hon. Mwale fit for chipangali, we have done it before with GBM and others.
The prblem once u go in2 politiks, it seems, iz that one cant think of anything else, it apararently makes pipo less inovative 2 survive in otha areas. politics becumz their all, their bread and butter. surely gentlemen havent u had u share in developing zmbia, cant u stil asist in otha areas? no wonda we not muvin az a nation, same old pipo, same tired ideas. pliz give othaz a chance.
lucas phiri claimz he had 2 join a party that wud help in eradicating poverty in hiz former constituency, question iz, wen he left az Mp did he live the pipo in a beta state, or they became poor afta he left? guys give me a break pliz.
