Katele Kalumba evacuated to India?

The Watchdog has been informed that MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba has been evacuated to India over his heart complication..

Kalumba, a former minister of finance, is said to have been evacuated by government on either Friday or Saturday.

Kalumba is facing some corruption charge in court arising from the time he was minister of Finance.

Information received indicates that the magistrate handling Kalumba’s case released his passport to enable him travel to India.

Last week Kalumba was admitted to Lusaka’ University Teaching Hospital (UTH) but was reportedly discharged. His admission to UTH followed a sharp pain in his chest a week ago.

But sources have revealed that he was not actually discharged but that a committee of doctors recommended that he be evacuated to India where his case can be properly handled. He is accompanied by his wife Lummba.

Though doctors recommended early last week that he should be evacuated, his trip was delayed as he was required to get a new passport as the one kept by the court was the old replaced type.

Sources further said that Katele has had the condition for the past five years.

  1. Sangstone Mukasa says:

I agree with “Yes we can” Katele ill-health is not new for us who follow his case. He must therefore get well and finish his defence which he started. Am sure his family would not like him to die an accused. And if he plundered millions he should be made to return these to the people. It is ethical Katele, don’t die on us. All the accused with him have been asked to return what they were accused to have received. Why did the Task Force not ask him to return $8000 if it was illegally received? For lawyers, this is an interesting case. The Task Force grabbed the BMW which belonged to OP not Katele after he was acquitted ( saying they would appeal. they never did under Levy) and then went and bashed it by a son of one big fish there. It is a known secret. A BMW for OP and $8000 dollars!!!! There are issues here and if Katele dies (knock on wood) we shall know only part of the story. I wished Levy was alive too. Remember how they embraced in Matero? I do not trust politicians. Dickson Jere was writing about Katele and Levy before Banda came to power. Very revealing of how politics works. By the way, Is Katele the surname or Kalumba? When I was at UNZA I remember a guy called Tizzy (nickname, looked like him) and when my employers sent to Chienge to monitor elections, they call him Kalumba Katele even children. His father is Mr Katele. I saw him and his grandmother who was known to be over 100 years (is she still alive?. I asked about his congolese roots, they laughed at me. His greatgrandmother’s grave site is a royal burial ground and was told she too lived long. I gave up my quest. His mother is very royal and alive. I gave up the story. But what happened to him? How much do we know this fellow for him to be such a public figure? The witch can’t heal himself, my wife is saying when his ancestors live so long.

  2. Augustine says:

Zambian government is not serious, they top officials (MPs) are more important than the people that put them into power. this should open the poor peoples eyes.

  3. CHRISTOPHER says:

I dont wish any one ill health but why doesnt the current government work on improving the Health structure.I guess an air ticket to india can get you a slab of a specialist hospital. How much money is going to be spent …..on evacutions?Any way for Doc Jesusis still the Healer!

  4. Sangstone Mukasa says:

Only the truth shall set us all free. To be accused in Zambia as perhaps in other politically challenged countries is easy. But we all must trust that not even the law, can defeat the truth. If Katele stole the millions of dollars Levy Mwanawasa or is it Ncito accused him of we shall know the truth. So far, those of us who have followed the State case and the beginning of this Chienge Dot com MP who was reportedly hiding in a rathole (believe that from Brenda Muntemba?) Defence have more questions than answers. Did he still the BMW for which he was kept at Kamwala Remand for 7 months (Did you know that?)? The court said NO. Did he still $40 million, the reason he is in court? The State said It was not a charge of theft, that was dropped but of facilitation in payments on security contracts to the Inteeligence service (How legal were the Contracts, Mutembo says that is not the question). Did Katele satrt this matrix of servicing the intelligence? The Court record appears to be saying saying NO? It was Penza and Nawakwi continued paying. The Court room evidence is clearly that he found these payments to security contracts on-going since 1995. If anything, according to Some State witnesses and his testimony, because of his commitment to reach HIPC Decision Point in 2000, a year after he went into Finance, he stopped the payments. So for my lay and not too angry and politically sophisticated mind, I ask: what is this man losing his heart for? Answer: $8400 according to Nchito. I wait to hear Katele’s explaination of that and therefore pray he recovers for us to know the truth from the Court not on blogs. Injustice does happen to people, I have this bad feeling that something went terribly wrong between katele and Levy. Funny they worked so well together. I pray for them.

  5. VETERAN
If i tell you i protested are going to believe me? Unlike you am not joined at the hip with any party, in short am not a confused headless chicken with no direction i give credit where it’s due and condemn when things are not right. Does that make sense to you, it’s no rocket science.

  6. KAPATAMOYO says:

    Veteran,

you have really brought your alias into disrepute. Have you recently changed your name? Are you not the same guy that use to insult Sata with your pretence to be educated?

Some of your comments just expose the kind of hand you are. You ain’t in touch with Zambians; and you do not really know us, nor are you on our side.

  7. Kaumb says:

Why poor Zambian tax payer’s money should be used to send a foreign national for treatment abroad? Why DR Congo cant pay for his citizen Jean Marie Vianney Kalumba ? It is not a secret the chap is congolese, like most of our leaders ( Benjamin Mwila, Kafupi ).

  8. Veteran says:

    mala msana wanzili,

Why did you protest when Sata was evacuated to SA and get a pacesetter (SP) mental plate inn his now high risk heart? Why don’t you sign that in event of a need emergency, GRZ should never evacuate any of the opposition leaders to save resources until the day Hospitals will be fully facilitated.

  9. Kanitundila! says:

Katele is simply using the formula FTJ used, get ‘ill’ when the cases are coming up and then suddenly get ‘healed’ when ‘acquited’. how clever.

  10. Smiley Face says:

Why should government officials always be flown out of the country for treatment? As long as they do not experience the hardships that ordinary Zambians face in these hospitals every time they get sick, these officials will never fully appreciate the depth of the problems in our health institutions. I firmly believe we have brilliant Zambian specialists that can handle most of these ailments, if only government can pay a little more attention to the overall development of the health sector. :)

  11. Luanna Lyszt says:

Consider this you that are unbiased deep thinkers. What if this whole Task force thing was created before 2001? What if it was the dream child of UPND and its masterminds were Mark Chona, Mutembo Nchito and Mwanawasa, who were acting as advisors to late Mazoka? what if the plan was once Mazoka got into power, his first instruction would be to lock up FTJ and his team? Would it paint a differnt picture on things? What if the creators of this team were told ‘dont worry, the plan goes ahead even if Mazoka is not President? Puts a different perspective on thinigs doesn’t it. For those of us who know, whose lives have been in danger because we know, my advice to you is simple. Do not beleive eveything that you read. Guess what, Presidents Lie. Politicans lie. People lie. Unless you are 100% sure that someone is rightly accused, please do not point fingers. Let justice take its course and pray that the truth will be revealed. Governments creat stories so that tyhey can stay inpower. If you don’t know that and understand that, then you are very far from the group of the enlightened. Peace be with you all.

  12. monalisasyndrome says:

Wretched is a system that safeguards and rewards criminals at the expense of innocent citizens.

  13. When we talk about upside down priorities plumes like MR CAPITALIST & VETERAN dodge the issues and start asking daft incoherent questions about Sata’s irrelevant, unconnected 90 day policy. Whats better to let kalumba die in UTH like the rest of us and buy hospital equipment to serve a lot more people or vice verse. Very uninspiring to say the very least.

  14. Tony Kasonde says:

LIFE IS VANITY! NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU COMPLAIN, U WILL NEVER BE EVACUATED! WHY, U MAY ASK? BCOZ LIFE IS VANITY…Eccl..chapter…verse…!

  15. simapa says:

Radio phoenix news at 13.00 hrs – Kenneth konga, Energy Minister is in India as wellon medical evacuation.Katele according to Health minister has an angina condition.

Spectator, i was equally touched the lady in mufulira, bedridden because of a routine polio vaccination that went horribly wrong . …. a wheelchair Government please to help the poor lady!

  16. bantu basuma says:

We love Katele. May the God lord heal the heart of our beloved national secretay.

  17. Engines says:

Wish you a quick recovery Honorable Dr Katele Kalumba MP from chiengi. The Rulling party MMD under Rupiah Bwezani Banda can not aford to have you and VJ in bad health at a time when we are still morning the late Hon Ben Tetamashimba MP MHSRIP.

  18. devastated says:

in 1997, my sister was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix and it was recommended that she be taken to SA for treatment. my sister was put on the waiting list for more than a year until she eventually died in 1998. MHSRIP.

Now, this was a law abiding citizen who deserved to benefit from tax payers money (to which she faithfully contributed) just like many ordinary Zambians.however, for some reason Govt did not deem it fit to serve her life. on the other hand, the same govt finds it fit to send a former minister, whose leadership record is pathetic, for treatment abroad using my hard earned money while many deserving Zambians are dying . I pray that God mercilessly deals with these govt chaps on judgement day!

    Now, a Chap like

  19. Ulemona says:

Why evacuate the same VIP’s whose DUTY it is to ensure that proper health facilities are available to ALLLLLL? You may recall – on labour day this year, when nurses and doctors were on strike, one union official complained to Kunda regarding evacuation of VIPs to SA – Kunda gave a very angry response because he felt it was his entitlement and that of other VIPs. What a shame – many of these guys so easily forget their humble origins. No vision and no foresight. No clue that there is tomorrow – when some of them may be VIPs no longer – and what about their friend, uncle or relative who is not a VIP? Actually, it’s us the zambian pipo to blame – it is a true maxim – that the leadership can only be as good as the pipo they lead!!

  20. spectator says:

Over the weekend i read in the post about a lady whoz been paralysed for 18 years after she had a polio vaccine in Mufulira. she must have been 10 at the time of the vaccine. the first thing that came to mind is what has the govt done for this poor lady. for 18 yrs someone has been bedridden while the so some called VIPs get evacuated for BP, weight and tempreture checkups abraod. who shall look after the poor if not for the govt? the kalumba chap needs treatment but do the other poor

  21. olomide says:

Why is tax payers miney being used on a former minister? He is not entitled to it.

Why cant a self proclaimed witch cure himself?

Why is a criminal being helped by goverment?

    Shame

  22. Mambwe says:

Katele should be prayed for instead of being accused

  23. Scott says:

It’s amazing how quick someone of stature can get a passport approved and issued within a week.

If it was so simple every citizen would not be asking for an extension of months to get theirs.

We hope that this is karma and he will come back to Zambia STABLE.

  24. The eye says:

Why doez gvt send certain pipo abroad 4 treatment while otherz cant b sent. the same money that iz spent on the so-called VIPs shud b spent on buying equipment etc 4 our hospitals so every one benefits. after all, Jesus died 4 all the pipo koz in HIS eyes we r all VIPs. pliz u pipo in gvt have mercy on us

  25. OKOCHA says:

How does one qualify for evacuation to other countries for medical attention on Government’s ticket? Is it every citizen of Zambia? Or we go back to the Animal farm??

  26. ngona says:

we cant talk bad things when a person is sick but these people are heartless and the only thing they think of is them selves.is it coincidental or its just crookedness that when some one steals the next thing is a heart problem so that his case drags for edges.let these people be attended to with in zambia like the people they ve stolen from.we are fade up with these thieves.

  27. Yes we can! says:

Too bad Katele tho its tax payers money at risk. My advise to the rest of plunderers is that repent and return the money u stole from ordinary Zambians while God renders u breath and be reminded that God shall bring every work into judgement wheather good or evil. We pray for Katele’s recuperation so that he can face the prosecution. Its high time also the government bought proper medical equipment for zambian hospitals so as to allow our qualified doctors carry out work effectively instead of sending these chaps abroad for medical attantion which cannot be done to the ordinary zambian.
