Fred M’membe starts defending himself
Post newspaper editor Fred M’membe Friday opened his defense in the case where he and his newspaper are facing contempt of court proceedings.
Magistrate David Simusamba on November 18, 2009 found M’membe and the Post newspaper with a case to answer.
The contempt proceedings arose from an article entitled ‘The Chansa Kabwela case: a comedy of errors’,that appeared in The Post edition of August 27, 2009 and which the state felt touched on the case of the People versus Chansa Kabwela.
Earlier chief resident magistrate Charles Kafunda had given a directive restraining media houses covering the Kabwela case from publishing any comments touching on the case.
In his defense today, M’membe said that at the time the article was published, he was on leave.
He told the court that he was pursuing a masters degree in Economics at the University of Zambia.
He said this was a full time course and all students were asked to take leave of work.
Trial continues.

Welcome Mulenga (and Jelita) atleast we have a dubious trinity of useless MMD cadres. It is good for you to add to the works of your friends Veteran and Capitalist. The South African embassy man (chief licker) is atleast not yet very bad.
Finally, Veteran has gone mad!
I am back!!
Hiroshima-Japan was a great idea but a little expensive. I see Fred is lying in court? It does not matter whether he was there or not the fact is that his paper wrote the article even after a court order restraining him to do so was issued. As they say…Ignorance is no defence!!! And by the way Fred should try the sciences not economics. He has too many arts degree already. Accounts , Law and now economics and none of these teach him how to think logically…sorry guys!!! Just a thought no harm to all who spent their life time doing Arts PhDs.
Veteran Napena.
Veteran. While I do not mind reading through what you write, I often find your reasoning off target and grossly misplaced.
Iwe chi colour Veteran What are you try to say?
