Earthquake hits Malawi

A strong earthquake has hit Malawi, and a government official says at least 3 people have been killed and nearly 300 injured.

The 6.0-magnitude quake struck the southeast African country at 01:19 on Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey.

Gasten Macheka, the commissioner of Karonga district, says it destroyed several buildings there, including schools. He says a dormitory at one government school fell on sleeping students, injuring scores of them.

Macheka says at least 270 000 people have been urged to leave their homes for their safety.

The Karonga district in northern Malawi has been hit by a series of earthquakes and aftershocks since the beginning of December.

Parts of Malawi that lie in the Great Rift Valley are prone to quakes.

Well Japan is hit by earthquakes almost every day and look at their economy, so strong they are able to withstand after effects of such natural events. Coming back home, we are worse off than civil war hit countries and now earthquakes are knocking our doors, it implies zambia or its poor neighbors will be like rubbish heaps all over.

Its sad to read Mucheleng’anga & Malindi’s comments. It proves that Zambians really hate their country. An American or Japanese would never write negatively about their country no matter how bad things get in the ghetto!

Mulebelenga ichipingo chakwa kabumba mukulu. The begining of the end of this system of things has already started. So take heed and repent of your sins.
