Chief wants Mazabuka vaccine trial officials arrested

Chief Mwanachingwala of Mazabuka district has has ordered the Microbicide Development Programme (MDP) to immediately devise a compensation scheme for the women who have been infected during trials.
The chief also told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that everyone who was involved in the research should be prosecuted for ruining the lives of 46 women that have since contracted the virus following the failed efficacy of the gel called PRO 2000.
He said some of the women have since petitioned him to intervene in the matter.
The traditional ruler said he will not allow any more trials to be conducted on human beings especially illiterate women in his chiefdom.
Chief Mwanachingwala said government should also investigate why only vulnerable and uneducated women were recruited under the research while those that understood the implications of the research were left out.
He advised government to be careful in future by not allowing organisations to conduct research that would result in increasing the HIV infection rate in the country.
Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Gary Nkombo has also called on government not to allow MDP to continue carrying out trials in his area.
MDP plans to initiate yet another ARV based microbicide and is targeting 60 women in Lubombo area in Chief Naluama in Mazabuka.
The Gel, PRO 2000, was administered on HIV negative women an hour before any sexual encounter to determine its effectiveness.
Yesterday, Mazabuka District MDP Community Liaison officer, Kennedy Mundia told ZANIS that calls to suspend the trials are counter productive because his organisation is in hurry to find a remedy for HIV/AIDS.

Perhaps the most important point to make is that AIDS did not happen by
accident any more than it did by nature. Nor is it the result of an insane plot by some deranged scientist or even a small team of deranged scientists. AIDS was the result of a decades-long research program carried out in Chemical and Bacteriological Warfare labs in the USA and others westrn countries. For those involved, it is a triumph of science and the answer to what they regard as the planet’s most pressing problem: population control.

Gents, lets drop the blame game and all the fuss about this story.We all know, and the people who were involved in it knew very well that this was just a trial, and with a trial results and can go either way.Trying out a product is a normal part of a scientific process.This experiment or trial has given the scientists the information they needed, that is to determine as to whether the product was 100% effective or needed to be enhanced further.We can only heap the blame on the people behind this if only they did not mention to the participants that they were only testing the effectiveness of the product on them, and that results could be negative or positive.Ladies and gentlemen, with all this technological and scientific advancement we have achieved in the field of Medicine and other areas there have been people who have lost their lives for our sake by accepting that these products be tested on their bodies before they are certified fit for use by all.And there is a way of compensating such people and i am sure that the partcipants in this case will also be compensated.I salute these ladies for taking such a risk for our sake.

For years and years we have been trying to reduce the numbers of infections, and that is when you are bringing this on us, making us lose our gains?
You can make your money and fame somewhere else. Talk about non-patriots? you are one of them – an enemy of the country. If one went and tried out a gun on people, and the people were injured, wouldn’t the Police arrest the person doing the experiments? they would; but because Kennedy and co. are supported by morally empty forces as strong as drug dealers, he cannot be touched.
What is the point in trying out these new products on people who are HIV negative and exposing them to infections? Why can’t scientists just concentrate on research that will deal with the infection in people who are already carrying the virus? For example, the ARV creation is a welcome science that addresses the problems which are already evident.
This nonsense of a trial must not be done anymore in Zambia or anywhere else, it must stop at once.
Bane n the first place our dead women whom did they sleep with lets ask ourselves this question. The way i look at it is the so called Mundia recruited his HIV positive relatives from Western to sleep with our innocent women, what a shame the so called interlectuals. This was no research but muder trials. Why didn’t you try it on educated people who know well about research? Or why didn’t you do it on the white ladies in the weatrn world?
