Govt to electrify palaces of Lamba chiefs

Government says it will soon resume the electrification exercise of chiefs’ palaces in Lufwanyama district in the Copperbelt province.

The electrification exercise is under the Rural Electrification programme.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lufwanyama, Deputy Minister for Commerce, Trade and Industry Lwipa Puma urged the chiefs not to despair over the stalled electrification exercise.
Dr. Puma said government was currently working on modalities to resume the project.

Dr Puma, who is also Lufwanyama Member of Parliament, said chief Shibuchinga’s palace will be electrified first and then the others will follow in phases.

He said government was committed to improving the standard of living for the people in the rural area through providing electricity.

The Rural Electrification Programme had been halted in Lufwanyama district, a situation that raised anger from the chiefs who complained that palaces for their fellow chiefs in others parts of the country were electrified.

  3. Mandingo says:

why not just put solar power at their palaces? do chiefs influence the votes of their subjects?

  4. JIGGA says:

When will ruling govts stop using ZESCO for their political campaigns, the rural electrification project has always been used for campaigns, the MMD is trying to win support of traditional leaders in lambaland so that they try to get rid of George Mpombo.

ZESCO is on its knees because of MMD & the govt,am sure up to now they still take money from ZESCO & don’t pay up,they have been doing it for years especially when Robinson Mwansa was MD,ZESCO could have been bigger.
Even the likes of Labour Minister Liato & his friends like Godfrey Beene abused their positions as UNION leaders and milked ZESCO and got people fired at HQ,Divisional & Regional Offices of ZESCO over payments to Liato & company which the MD at the time,Mwansa authorised by phone but what happened in the end,it’s those who issued payments that got fired including Miss Cifire the Deputy Minister of Information who was Senior HR Manager, what a shame, the World Bank & other financiers of ZESCO should push for ZESCO to be privatised so that it can be a profitable entity again,we are tired of the excuse that rural electrification will be abandoned if ZESCO goes into private hands.
