We didn’t push for degree clause, UPND MP
United Party for National Development (UPND) Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo has dismissed allegations that his party pushed for the Presidential clause which states that a presidential candidate should obtain a first degree or its equivalent to contest as Republican president.
Nkombo refuted allegations by MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya that the UPND was in the forefront in pushing for the presidential degree clause.
Nkombo said the clause would amount to discrimination and questioned the consciousness of NCC commissioners. He was speaking to MUVI TV News in Lusaka.

Between a rock and a hard place?..what does it matter who called for a degree clause? NCC members are ‘suppose’ to represent views of their constituency but what isnt fair is that after the debate in parliament one must now come and say this is what I said name those who spoke otherwise. This is a breach in leadership qualities that we are trying to prescribe to and Young Nkombo should know better that as an aspiring Minister for Education in HH led government he cannot go displaying the hansard like a reporter…if the Post,Times, or Daily Mail want to dig and see who said what let them do the digging…show some leadership qualities please by applying a little restraint even if one feels provoked.
As for the alleged pushing of a Degree clause by UPND members, I see no problem with this since Mr MC Sata, unelected leader of PF, has two degrees of which the POST Newspaper failed to inform us about his graduations. Anyway, let Mr MC Sata’s claim that he has two degrees continue keeping the UPND-PF PACT together until presidential nomination day and then we will see who is who and who has what.
Following “The UPND NEC welcomed me with open arms and the warmth they transmitted gave me great hope that at last I have joined a team that is committed to solving Zambia’s problems, a fundamental ethos of my campaign” in the published letter by Dr Clive Chirwa, I am glad that tribalists will soon accept that trying hard to smear mad at the mighty U(PND)-Team will not help them since Dr Clive Chirwa an Easterner and Bemba by speech has joined the 2011 would-be winning team.
To the PF counterparts in the UPND-PF PACT, I hope they will begin checking themselves as to why they are not attracting credible people who are praising their manifesto. Anyhow, lets hope MMD continues to help theUPND grow countrywide at an alarming rate.

Dora nabuhule bwake..just wants u pipo in da pact to fight over da cl;aues..they pushed it ba mudidi..
I don think they is something wrong with the degree clause,we need some who can influence the nation thru new technology. The world is changing, globalisation is taking place.
The degree clause is here to stay. We do not need every Jim and Jack to rule us. Imagine a police constable being your president and i mean a constable in 1940s, rubbish. We petitioned Mungo’mba Commission when there were going round Zambia and abroad that we need leaders of the 21st century not kwangalas like Satan, foolish Ngombo.
It is possible UPND could have influenced other MPs to deal with MCS as he is a threat to them. However for PACT is ba MC SATA
The retirement age in Zambia is around 55-57 years, let them also add that clause and see how MMD reacts. In fact this would make more sense than having a degree holder!
nanga ba dorah bamene aba degree bamekela ilikuti? wasnt she just studying whilst
working? so they find it sinista 4 batata ba sata to have a degree? Ba dorah and
other cacoons, they are chitting themselvz. Thats why in bemba they say amafi
yanunka nayauma. Sata has a degree just wait. The man sponsored himself to learn
flying when the so called shikapwasha failed and Dr. Kaunda retired him to promote
the late Gen Hanniah Ben Maposa Lungu. Even cozmo mumba has a degree and then you
say sata cant afford, mulibe manyazi.
MMD pushed for this clause because it has an interest, otherwise MMD could have shot it down.
Since they have acheived what they wanted, next is to cause divisions in the pact by claiming that UPND has betrayed PF. This divide and rule type of leadership is very prevalent in MMD circles.
Kizito, well put, i can smell some wisdom in you unlike the other character.
Well all the aspiring presidential candidates have degrees at the moment really no need to punic.
KIZITO walasa!!!
Even if UPND pushed for it,, so what..? they know sata has a degree,, upnd has very few member how can it pass the required votes. use your judgement…
cant trust politicans, its possible the UPND could ve pushed for the degree clause.
