HH accuses Post reporter of bias

Post Newspaper reporter Patson Chilemba sandwiched between Patrotic Front leader Michael Sata and former PF secretary general Edward Mumbi during the PF's last rally in Lusaka in 2008 elections (Photo Courtesy of Picture Monger)

“There is no point using access to the media to go and tell half truths so that the media can beat down Hakainde. After killing Hakainde you realise I was innocent.”

“Patson, don’t be biased you are a reporter. I told you that I am not responding to that matter because if you say that, was I not called an under-five? Didn’t you write it in your paper?” Hichilema asked.

Reminded that that statement was issued before the PF and UPND got into a pact, Hichilema responded: “Don’t be biased please. I have said to you that I am not responding in the newspaper on that matter. We will discus through our normal structure. So don’t drive me into that direction, please, I am pleading with you.

I have given you a clear position…that is where you want to drag me, but I refuse to be dragged there Patson, please. It won’t help you to be biased and use you media to beat down Hakanide.”
Asked on Sata’s statement that he had not gone round the country denouncing him, but he Hichilema had done so, Hichilema responded: “Patson you are driving me to answer my colleague in the media.”
Reminded that the earlier statement he issued about being young was also through the media, Hichilema responded: “Why didn’t you ask me at that time? You were there at the Airport. Your members were there, why didn’t you ask me?

But you see what you are trying to do. Patson, let’s be reasonable to each other. You must listen. You are a media person. You don’t control Hakainde. You must understand that, you must realise that. It is important that you must respect my response to you that I will not deal with that issue in the media…

“You gave me a call, I said on that matter I will not respond in the media because we have established channels to do that. So you are refusing to take that answer so that you can write an answer you want to write.”

But this author told Hichilema that he was just doing his duty of asking questions on behalf of the nation.

In response, Hichilema said: “But you also have a duty to respect Hakainde’s views. Even if you don’t like Hakainde, but you have an obligation to respect Hakainde.”
This author told Hachilema that he respected his views, but should also respect his questioning.

But Hichilema insisted that he might not be liked but that his views should be respected.
This author told Hichilema that The Post did not hate him.

The author tried to clear the air by telling Hichilema that he had simply asked him to respond because his earlier statement was equally carried in the media.
Hichilema responded.

“But because you have a biased position which everybody knows right? And it won’t help you to drag me into that direction so that you can then end up with a conclusion which you already designed,” Hichilema said. “It is not an accusation, I am telling you.”
This author said The Post did not operate like that.

Hichilema responded: “I am saying you, I didn’t say how The Post operates, you.”
This journalist told Hichilema that accusing him of being biased was not part of the story.
This journalist also asked Hichilema if there was anything wrong in being asked questions.

But Hichilema just asked this reporter to take his answer:
“That is why I am answering you. I am answering because I respect your views, but I want you to take my answer,” he said.

The post is helping MMD destroy the pact each day..we don’t know what they really want!patson and ur colleagues..have lost it all..come 2011,you shall not sell well if the pact doesn’t from govt!respect both leaders and don’t be biased..we all know how bisaed you ve been covering UPND and u prefer to cover even useless comments from the PF!

The picture here and the reaction of that reporter when it was published told a story.

Its not a secret any more who the Post supports. If you are clever enough, you would also know why. What the POST and PF seem to miss in their reasoning is that by attacking HH and UPND, they are not gaining the UPND and neutral supporters to PF instead people will develop sympathy for HH and UPND. Those who suppot HH will eventually start seing a PF loss in 2011 as a win for HH as such if they see that HH’s chances have been harmed by negative media reports, they will vote MMD just to ensure PF does not win. If the POST can not see this, then they are not worthy political analysts.

As it stands, the POST currently attack RB and HH but not Sata. A PF loss in 2011 will also be a POST loss and that will be the end of the remaining credibility that the paper has. Times and Daily mail are to MMD what the POST is to PF! The POST argue that they have nothing to loose as even after 2011 they will still be practicing their jounalism, well, even the jounalists at Times and Daily mail are still practicising their jounalism – enough said!

What I find strange is that if you go into the POST archieves, you will find editorials that were saying Sata was not presidential material. But suddenly or perhaps not so sudenely, he is the best Zambia can have. Since nothing has changed about Sata, its the POST that has changed. If someone can change opinions like that on something that is constant, it says a lot about that person…..muselela kwakaba!

The Post think they can behave like small gods in Zambia dictating the way things should be done. They even have the pride to dare HH to use other media if he wants. Only time we tell the true worthy of this guy Mmebe and his colleagues at the Post who behave like satanists sometimes. He is overating himself and surely his shameful end is near. Again, only time will tell!!!

He is now about to graduate from ‘under 5.’

HH is right. The Post is very biased in its style of reporting. It seems the conspiracy to gain urban-Tonga votes for PF extends into the corridors of The Post Newspaper management. This newspaper has abandoned all ethics of journalism that have been founded on the ideals to “inform and educate” the public. A mere application of simple statistical analysis of its headlines ever since RB took over the reigns of govt, reveals that more 75% of its headlines were designed to consistently discredit and paint a bad picture of RB. It has long ceased to be a source of credible stories. Guillible readers are prone to religiously believe that facts being consistently potrayed in this paper are true. This has been the goals the Post has been trying to achieve. But time will catch up with them. The Gaboon Viper (beutifully coloured but deadly snake) the newspaper seem to support is well-known for enjecting its venon on anyone who dares exhibit signs of dissenting views. Dissenting views originating from prominent members of UPND has worried many stakeholders of the well known clique in the conspiacy. Besides, it is common knowledge that any political leader the paper tries to discredit has substantial following that will matter in any Presidential election. The Post will reap what it has sown. Yes, HH is right that the Post is very biased.

Let it be clear in the minds of ALL Zambians that The Post does not support anyone of either PF’s Sata or UPND’s Hichilema. The Post never supported MMD’s Magande either. The Post always supports the one and only narcissistic Fred Memmbe. Any person who will become a darling of the Zambian people and out does Membe will be attacked until he falls in the estimation of the people. When he has fallen, and is down, The Post will come along side him and be his friend again. Let those who are incisive observers of Zambian politics and media remember Kaunda, Chiluba and others. Membe likes anyone who ‘looks up to him.’

Seasoned public personalities know that if you are built up by the media, you will be brought down by the media. HH must start his own publicity machinery. Hichilema has enough financial clout to start his own newspaper or buy The Post, if he has to outmanoeuvre the snake.

The Post chap who was “interrogating” HH is both dull and ignorant. How does he bully a person who has the news he is looking for?

No one is under obligation to tell the media anything they do not want to. The media is not Police or court, in fact, people can choose not to answer the Police or a court.

The Post man must not think that he has the right to information at any and all costs.

If I were Mmembe, I would suspend this chap for causing HH undue stress.

The Post is a business out to make money not to be a mouth piece for anyone. Zambian politics being what they are, the Post will be in business for a long long time because these politicians are all the same …. all corrupt, petty and vindictive. If the Pact forms next gov, there will be “Shikapwashas” who will harangue The Post for being “unethical”. The Post knows all of this of course. The problem with the pact is that it was not founded on a strong foundation and even if it was, most political parties in Zambia and woven from the same cloth of intolerance, incompetence and kudya beka. MMD, PF and UPND are all more of the same s*h*i*t on a different day.

Membe and the post are biased . Membe and the post tried to paint a good picture about SATA in the last presidential bye election. The reports were that SATA had penetrated SP, WP and NWP and even went to the extent of bringing the old pictures of 2006 election just to try and built SATA but you saw the direction of the results in the said provinces. you are not helping the old man coz HH is indispensable if SATA is to rule Zambia.AS a paper you have never accepted that you are biased and also make mistakes like any one else. only God does not make mistakes you must change and report fairly. Even if you hate HH try to cover him fairly in order to save the PACT from total demise. Don’t argue with the public coz it is us who read your paper and give you business. If you love Zambia like the majority of us do save the pact from total collapse. Stupid statements made by Kabimba and Musenge just because they are PF you never condemned them yet you were very quick to condemn \Matambo coz he is UPND .These are some of the examples

Some people will even stop buying their paper as soon as one credible and not biased comes on board! To them LP mwanawasa was a cabbage, MC Sata was not a material[but now he is!],HH has never been their man, to an extent of putting him under such stress by a patson, let alone the pictures they choose to publish [in solwezi and mufumbwe].RB has never received any good editorial.Let membe form his party to prove his worthy! when he was arrested, who demonstrated?

Understand that as Zambia evolves democratically, people are claiming their dignity by rejecting the inimical crusade of Marxists in the tabloid. In contemporary political dispensation precedence standing, no one supported by the Post tabloid has ever won national elections except where they opportunistically jump the wagon to join the fanfare of winners at 11:45 am before victory party time at 12 noon. Theirs is an imaginary community of supporters. They lamentably failed in 2001, 2006, 2008 and will fail flat with crash if not poor landing in 2011. Yes through unethical Post’s Patson Chilemba they hate Ichilema to the born. But such is inconsequential incorrigible hatred. In short they are all in a prisoner’s dilemma to nowhere.

Very sad indeed to see the prematurely born Pact 1 year on still gasping for air on its ICU surgery bed.

Intra-party or institutional democracy is no exceptional in any dream of being a national party for and on a democratic people. This pact circus is a classic case of personality cult where a political power hungry unpatriotic dictator marries an overzealous vulnerable fellow opportunist without a support base involved.

  • Senior Citizen wrote on 25 July, 2010, 21:51

Democratic peace theory says at state or institutional level” democracy does not fight democracy”. The circus in the so-called pact is hiding nothing on the fact that they are diametrically opposed fierce enemies at war of words because they are not democrats but hegemonic tribal warlords thriving on parochial none national interests. They bumped into each other without a purpose, mechanism, standards, national interest and character.

The biggest problem with M`membe is that if nobody agrees with him then its hatred. The only reason why M`membe is against HH is because of M`membe`s inferiority complex to HH. So M`membe tries to use uncivil methods to bring HH down. Its a blessing to have a person like HH because today they are very few Zambians of HH calibre especially in Business.M`membe tried to run Zambian Airways where is it? The problem was M`membe and his friends lacked bizness acumen to that level.
This guy patson twisted some facts. For instance, HH never said becoz of his young age he was better than Sata. When HH came back from the USA held a press conference where he was asked to comment on the statement made by some politicians that he was too young to be president. Then HH offered a response that a number of countries are drifting to young guys and gave examples of Russia, UK, USA, Tanzania, Rwanda etc.
Perhaps the other reason M`membe does not want HH to be president is because HH would so smart that there will be no or very gaps for M`membe to criticize.

We can only see that from inception, they have lacked a clear cut Performance Management System -PMS.Just amuzed to see that intelligent Ichilema went into this circus only to entrap himself under siege of retarded Sata. He discarded common sense, all professional approach of valuing relevant performance management tools of scorecarding, dashboarding, report analytics and high level event planning that should have given him unparallel edge. Sadly he went for a legion of low life none thinkers of Sata, Kambwili, Patson Chilemba, Nsanda, ex-priest Fractured Bwalya, Mumbi Phiri, Jean Kapata, Mukuka, Augustine Mwewa, simon Kabanda, Giftless Rasheed Lubinda, Afraid Membe and Geoffrey Mwamba. What can one get intellectually from this tribal cabal? Can it be quality, wisdom, value or their thuggery?

  • Senior Citizen wrote on 25 July, 2010, 22:26

Zambians pride in their nation and will never risk the country’s democracy, peace, unity, goodwill and opportunities with unstable undemocratic minded tribal who is nothing but a failed and repeatedly rejected warlord who lacks purpose and common national interest. Except Chinese’s Chiang Kai-shek and his nationalist party Kuomintang (KMT) as Sun Yat-sen’s close ally hibernated to Taiwan, never heard of a leader who says if he loses elections he will seek asylum in Taiwan so that his thugs can burn the country. If Chiang Kai-shek’s strategy worked in China, it will work for Sata in Zambia. Otherwise, he will go burn in hell there in Taiwan and here Zambia will miss him not.

On a count, by the time of this post, there were posts from about 16 bloggers 14 of which have seen through the scemes of the POST. In simple maths, 87.5% of the bloggers so far think the post has lost it. Would be nice to have an opinion poll of the question: ‘Do you think the POST is biased?’

Of course the Post is biased and has been so for many years. The tragedy however is that many supporters of the Pact failed to understand this and were blinded by their desire to have the Pact succeed in its mission of toppling the MMD government.

In a sense, the recent events are a blessing for our great country. The instability that a Pact government would have brought to the governance of our land would have been delibitating. Especially as the likely leader was to be Mr Michael Sata.

Zambia, it seems, is performing far below its potential and is yearning for a more visionary leadership. Sadly the posse of RB, MC and HH just do not appear to have this inspirational quality. Meanwhile the Post will continue to confuse the masses who will believe everything they write which ultimately makes us less united and perform even more below our potential.

Interestingly over the years government’s approach in trying to overcome the Post challenge has largely taken using “the system” i.e. ZRA, police, licensing etc. which I think is rather amateurish and not strategic. The reason that the Post is what it is today is that the competition lacks credibility and is not well resourced. For those who fear the unknown, having the press in private hands is a scary prospect. But surely two newspapers which in any case have poor circualtion is a bit of an over kill. It is time to take the plunge and sell one of them to a credible entity with the resources that shall raise Zambian journalism from its current gutter state.

Sadly however, fear of the unknown is likely continue to overwhelm us, and the insulting editorials will continue accompanied by basic reporting (saying what someone said or did) without any indepth analysis. This is not the journalism of this century and is most certainly far less than our great country deserves!

Enough has been said and everyone seems to agree that the Post Newspaper are biased in their reporting. The picture above also says much about the said reporter and were his royalties lie. I just want to point out one fact which Mmembe and his Post editorial comments seem to miss: most people who bother to read the lenghty post editorial comments are highly enlightened hence they are able to analyse issues. It’s most likely that they will see through the schemes of the authors. The more baised they editorial commentries become the more likely people will stop reading them or the more likely they would sympathise with the victims.

Look at countries like Botswana, with population less than 2 million but there are more than 5 Independent media with good editorial comments non biased. The media should act like Judges before two persons with different views and analysing in a professional manner. Not keeping on attacking Hakainde for the past 4 years.Even if you hate someon like that but do not bring on the public fora.

HH clearly didnt want to say anything, but this guy wanted something that could cast HH in a negative light.

I have been wondering whter the Post still has reporters because they only gather their News stories through phones, and they normaly phone a few selected pipo, who are mostly against RB. Top of this list, is of course Sata, Mpombo, Magande, Lubinda, Kabimba, Kavindlele and occasionally, Sondashi, Kashita and some disgrantled elements from the New deal. Are these really the only pipo who can give a good analyisis of Zambia, or they have taken a certain line already?

Under the title “Who is to blame?” of today’s POST Newspaper Editorial Comment, the POST wrote “Only the other day, Hakainde Hichilema was accusing us of bias, trying to blame us for the problems their pact was facing. Why do they do this to us?
All of us, commit actions that hurt ourselves and others. We call these actions wrongs… We cannot sacrifice 19 years of painful work for peanuts; we are not for hire. We are a newspaper and not an insurance company, and no one should think because they are our friends, our relatives or because they extended some favour to us, then that was a premium protecting them from being touched, being exposed and criticised when they do wrong. The only effective and efficient insurance policy from our criticism is doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances. Blaming us for things we have no control over, we have not done will not do
    “.

To me this write up shows that the POST seems to know that once president HH is elected Zambian President then the POST will not be making money on political news because HH is just to careful in the way he handles issues.

I therefore hope the POST is not referring to itself in its own today’s editorial where it presents a picture of those who killed Jesus but did not know what they were doing.

In light of yesterday’s the POST Newspaper Editorial entitled “We are not responsible for their problems“, the POST’s:

Yesterday UPND president Hakainde Hichilema said something that forced us to once again stop and reflect. In not so many words, he blamed us for the problems that they are facing in the pact. The question is why?

We all have our responsibilities to our people. Each of us has a duty and a role to play in this collective that we call our country. Hakainde has chosen the political path. That is a good thing. He should do that to the best of his ability and with absolute honest, honour and integrity.

And posterity will judge him accordingly. For our part we have chosen journalism as a means of contributing to the building of a more just, fair and humane homeland. We also strive to discharge the responsibilities of our chosen profession to the best of our ability, with integrity and honour.

as well as the insults on UPND president that issued are just bent on distracting the UPND Team in the August 5, 2010 elections.

My understanding now is that the POST wants to make sure that UPND does not have time to campaign in Luena Constituency and some Wards across the country so that the UPND’s growth is impeded. I think the POST believes that under any circumstance, PF will win the Chifubu Constituency as remain constant. If such obtains after the August 5, 2010 elections, the POST will happy and then continue supporting or propping up Mr PF/Sata MC to be the 2010 PF-UPND PACT presidential candidate.

    This explains the POST’s:

If the pact breaks, Hakainde’s political party will truly shrink to a Bantustan. For Hakainde, this pact is everything because if it fails both himself and his party will be reduced to almost nothing politically.

The pact has given him and his party a new breath of life. He has benefited more from the pact than his partners. And he knows very well that without the pact, his political career has to be scaled down to probably that of a councillor in Monze.

Without the pact, Hakainde has no political future to talk about and hence the desperation. But he shouldn’t take out his frustration on us because he will be very sorry. There’s no need to pretend or to posture about this. Those with more to gain or more to lose need to put in more effort and care.

Have a blessed day all and I admonish all sensible Zambians not to worry about the triablists are the POST, but to look at the bigger picture to not letting flip-flop bad leaders who messed Zambia in the recent past to mess Zambia again.

    aahh! Veteran,

What has Performance Management System got to do with the pact? ok,ok,ok, if it has failed to work in the government where people are on salary, how do you expect it to work in a voluntary organisation, who is gonna monitor the performance of another?

In the government, there is no measure of ones performance of any kind. No wonder there is alot of corruption when you want to get a passport, a reg, a driving licence etc

Ba Post, yes we are not happy with the way you are handling the pact issue. I wonder what your interest is.

We want both parties to work together in liberating Zambia, other parties can also join in this ‘ Project called, Zambia in the Sun’

Country men and women, there is a serious misconception in our country that who ever is in good books with the Post, then he is a good man, and many naive Zambians have come to blindly accept this. I have said here and again that, the Post Newspaper is in business trying to make ends meet, mostly by paying little or no attention to what happens in its trail of News reporting.

It does so by creating heroes and herons and makes them believe they are the real ones in eyes of many Zambians. What a shameless illusion. Some big politicians and citizens have fallen pray to such schemes. An example is G. Mpombo, Father Frank Bwalya, M.C. Sata and indeed HH himself.
The saddest part is that these fellows allow the Post to be their mouth piece, there by making them unknowingly diverting from their ideologies.

By the time the Post have nothing to write about them, or have found greener pasture, they are lost and feel betrayed, because they have lost a mouth piece and direction. What remains is to cry foul.

I have never heard any of them criticize the Post when it writes bad and treasonable articles about the government and it’s nation for fear of loosing “good” coverage. But when the Post feels it has nothing to do with these same politicians, it quickly changes and writes negatively about them, mostly when they least expect it.

My view was that during the turbulence of the PACT, the Post was going to be in fore front trying to correct things. Alas, i may be dreaming as well.

Clearly, my fellow Countrymen and women, let’s change our mindset, this is an eye opener that by allowing a selfish tabloid to lead us in analyzing and finding credible leadership shall one day lead us in to serious trouble.

It’s us ordinary Zambians who will suffer, we have problems with the ruling government not delivering according to our expectations in terms of social infrastructure, especially here in the urban areas where roads are not only inadequate, but also poor, dilapidated Health care system, civil servants salaries leaves much to be desired, schools are few. (Income tax, PAYE, Kufwa nayo) name them.

It is sad that we can’t identify our own strategy on how to deal with this issue. Until one newspaper feels it can lead in solving this paradox, only adding more confusion to the issues at hand. The Post has proved to be a big let down, it’s a shadow of a newspaper it used to be when Zambians united in 1991, when KK had to go.

Let us all unite and find a formula free from manipulation by any tabloid, let’s analyze issues. To me after all, it looks like there is actually nothing to change about the government. We have the Investment we needed in the Mining sector and Agriculture. The strategy is how do we get the service we want from the ruling GRZ. Look at the rural areas, all developmental agenda is in the rural areas; name them schools, hospitals, roads. Give a call to your relatives in the rural areas, you be shocked. If some of those resources were channeled here in the urban areas, we can not talk about these 11th Century POTHOLES in Lusaka, the Capital of Zambia.

    Strategy, strategy…………………………! Lets wake up…..!

Membe knows if Upnd is in power he will be finished..he stands a better chance with Sata o whom he has damaging data..HH on the other hand has never been a civil servant made his money long before Membe knew what really money was so there are elemnts of jealousy envy and even fear of what a self made man can do to a person not sure about his parentage.

Membe has sent his misguided chola boy Goliath to come up with dirt on HH but he has failed and each time he reports as such his boss sends him back….good luck we shall meet after 2011
