CAF elections which Kalu won were manipulated, claims losing candidate

Namibia Football Association president John Muinjo claims the recent CAF executive committee elections were ‘unfair’ as their outcome had already been ‘pre-planned’.

Muinjo, who lost out on the CAF executive committee seat for the Southern Zone to Zambia’s Kalusha Bwalya in Khartoum last Wednesday, told Namibian Sport yesterday that CAF president Issa Hayatou had manipulated the process to ensure that his preferred candidates were elected.

He alleged that apart from favouring ‘French-speaking people’, Hayatou had ‘bribed people’ by offering them R15 000 and mobile phones to cast their votes in favour of the winners.

“It’s a shame for African football,” Muinjo said.

“There’s no transparency in CAF.  The CAF president dictated to the electorate who he wanted them to vote for.”

Muinjo said his reaction was not that of a borne out of defeat, but that he felt aggrieved as he believed he had been the ‘frontrunner’ in the lead up to the elections.

However Muinjo managed only five votes to finish third out of four candidates after South Africa’s Danny Jordaan and Justino Fernandes from Angola withdrew.

He further alleged that Fernandes had been instructed to pull out of the race.

“CAF is not ready for honest people. Someone was sent to me by the CAF president to tell me that he doesn’t want me.

Muinjo added that Africa’s southern hemisphere will keep failing to infiltrate top CAF positions if they continue to live in disharmony.

  7. Kalusha is a legend, and zambians must learn to celebrate its heroes. Which Zambian footballer has consistently played the game for 23 yrs? Rooney and Beckham are what they are because the british people support and love them. Simataa Simataa and andrew kamanga are not fit to even polish Kalusha’s boots.

  14. ZWD elevated this guy’s profile by mentioning that he was instrumental in hosting the africa cup of Nations, but if we critically look at the event and how it is organized, this chap may be a nonentity. Angola, much as they are rich with oil and the rest orf resources, their football is yet to mature. Danny Jordaan lost he has not said anything despite being credited to host the world cup-first on african soil and last in our time. For this little man, he should grow up and wait for the next election. Stop crying like a baby.

  15. Kalu: You see Danny you organised the world cup, you are now a global name. I will give you my FIFA support if you leave this small CAF position to me. I spoke to Sepp he’s already agreed.

Danny: Cool man, this sounds great, you take my CAF votes and I take your FIFA ones you mean?

    Kalu: Exactly, thankyou and goodbye.

  17. So French, R 15,000 and cell phones cost the Namibian man his place and earned Kalusha his? How ludicrous. In any case Namibia is not that much of a performing football nation as far as common knowledge goes. Sore losers do not look at the bigger picture when throwing up their bile in disgruntled fashion. As King Julian says I hope the guy can produce his evidence or forever keep his peace. In the meantime, congratulations to Kalusha Bwalya for doing us proud!!!! Whatever is against you will fail as long as you are on the right path.

  18. Whatever the percieved issues against Kalusha Bwalya, he is Zambian and we must all rally behind him! We have our own amongest the elite managers of Football on the continent.CONGRATS Kalu and move on until you become CAF President!

  19. The guy sounds disgruntled. I think Africans are sore losers. There’s always claims of fraud when they lose. Since when is Kalu “French speaking?’ Anyway. Launch complaints through proper channels and produce evidence as opposed to running to the press to make unfounded accusations.
