Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda has retracted a statement attributed to him where he was questioning the credibility of next week’s polls.
KK, who has just returned from Namibia where he was hospitalized says he was tricked into singing the statement by Fred M’membe and Mark Chona, the Watchdog understands. Sources close to the freedom fighter have told the Watchdog that he is bitter as he didn’t really understand what he was signing when it was given to him by Fred M’membe when he went to his house Wednesday afternoon.
Sources say Mark Chona, who has tricked KK before in his life, was at KK’s house the whole of Tuesday discussing elections.
Sources say the statement was drafted by Chona and M’membe.
And KK’s office has refuted the statement saying it was not done by KK.
Chief of staff in the office of the first President Godwin Mfula told reporters in the evening that the letter was circulated by the Post newspaper and was not on the letterhead for the office of the fisrt president.
Mfula also said KK does not use such strong language in his statements. Mfula also cast doubts on the authenticity of the signature on the statement.
Mfula explained that all statements by KK are done in his office but that he did not know about this one.
He also said that KK is still on bed rest and always sedated thereby making him incapable of understanding some issues.
In the earlier statement which he has retracted, KK had said revelations that Universal Print Group the printers of ballot papers for next week’s election has been involved in acts of corruption with Electoral Commission of Zambia officers is a grave indictment on the electoral process.
The statement which KK was coerced to sign stated that the revelation in itself threatens the peace and stability of the country because it undermines the credibility of the electoral process in the eyes of the Zambian people.
The statement said the act breeds justifiable suspicion of possible collusion and electoral malpractices that may lead to the election result not being accepted by both the losers and the winners.
The statement said it is therefore in the interest of everyone that the ECZ rises to the challenge and deal with the complications that have been created by the revelations of the character of UPG to the reasonable satisfaction of all key political players.
It warned that ignoring such a serious problem may prove to be a naive and costly mistake that the country cannot afford.
The statement called upon the ECZ, to act in a way that makes the preservation of peace possible regardless of the outcome of the elections.
It said this will require that the Electoral Commission of Zambia urgently sits with all key political players, including the church, to ensure that this problem is resolved in the best way possible for the country.
KK, as ECZ ambassador for peace is being paid huge sums of money.
The pictures of KK in the newspapers and bill boards are not done free of charge but ECZ is paying him millions of Kwacha.

Wait for the biggest upset ever on Zambian politics! While RB was fying around like a bird, and while Sata was swimming in the comfort of urban support and forget the rural voters, HH spent a signficant amount of time in the countryside, explaining his manifesto and interacting with rural dwellers. We the urbanites who believe in the UPND manifesto continued to sell it to many and won many hearts. It is time for HH and the UPND to harvest from where they sow. Sata and RB will want to pick something where they did not sow but sorry, this is not possible.

Clearly today is the last day and things are getting interesting to say the leasts. However, I fo hope this is not true as Mmembe is a journalist and although he may be entitled to his own opinion and to one vote, I cannotsee how it would be in his or anyone’s interests at all to credit or discredit the elections.

A tribalist is a person who perceives and judges the world from point of view centered about own tribe. A person driven to achieve goals determined to uplift or serve desires of own-group above others. To answer my question – both are to some degree. The worst mistake is to bring tribalism into politics as this force is very destructive. As you know politics being a field of different opinions, tempers can easily flare.
In 2001 as UPND was seemingly headed for victory and for the first time in Zambian political history, a political party ie UPND declared that “the party’s objective was to have a tonga president at state house”. This is a pure tribal statement. (Anyone who support(ed)s this is a tribalist). This pronouncement by party stalwarts like Mr Sejani, sent shock waves across the nation. Potential Non tongas were hounded out of the party.
Majority tongas welcomed rather than condemn the new UPND position. in fact supporters were overtly reminding everyone that it was time for “a tonga…” .
The party had over estimated its popularity.
Having shown its true color, Mass defections and resignations at every level ensued. Upnd was a party not to be trusted with political power. UPND will never recover from that grave sin.
No need to sleep at polling stations. Vote counting in full view of all representatives starts soon after voting ends at 18:00hrs. Results will be validated and endorsed by all present, announced and stuck on notices for everyone’s eyes. This is the procedure. If there are “riggers” planted somewhere they definitely have no chance in these proceedings.

I am covinced that many Zambians now agree that the solution to our county’s econonomic problems depend on a polititical system supported by a good constitution. My appeal to whichever party that will assume power next week is to look at our constitution with the seriousness it deserves. If such a party does not deliver on the constitution, the people of Zambia should exercise their right to call for an early election and remove them from power. We should continue to do so until we get the people driven constitution that we have have been fighting for in the past 47 years. The keys issues in the constitution are the change to Head of State(elected among the members of the house of chiefs on a 5 year rotational term of office), a head of government or Prime minister elected by his/her party and who goes on to win the majority votes in a general election and the appointment of ministers from outside parliament. This will gurantee the separation of powers.

KK has always been an id.io.t. This fool was overcharged by a factor of three by Anglo American when nationalising the mines in the late 60s. Anglo American Corporation still boast today that it is KK who transformed them into a global corporation by providing them with a windfall to expand beyond Africa. so I am not surprised that he appended his signature to a document he didnt read!
This is the same KK who inherited a country with a per capita income of $1500 and stupidly managed to bring it down to $300 in his 27 years of misrule! Fonko Fonko is half-literate like Sata and Banda.

The Real Muntu, I totally agree with you. My heart bleeds for our children of mixed tribes. My own children have a mother from another province. Sometime in the past, they came home on a particular day feeling downcast. Upon my enquiry, they asked me to explain why certain people speak ill of my tribe. Since they have my name which every Jim, Jack or Jane knows to be of my tribe, they, without reasoning took it for granted that the children were…… and spewed the rubbish we all are reading from some of the bloggers on this site.
Lets be careful of the words that leave our mouths or else it will be too late to repair the damage these words would have caused. Hatred, bitterness and anger have never been a virtue. Be careful of politicians who are vindictive and promising to do this or that to their rivals when they come into power.

PF, sata, membe and the post are wickedly desperate for support from the Zambian people by resorting to all sorts of tricks, including deceiving an old kk, which unfortunately will not salvage them from their eminent destruction. That is why they are doing their best to casty doubt on ECZ so that by deception they try to convince Zambians to fight against one another. Thanks be to God that Rupiah is winning genuinely while sata permanently goes into the archives and Mr. membe will be moving from court to court for the many offenses he has committed. 2016 HH or Chipimo will carry the day. God bless Zambia and through faith in His Name there will be no war after the results confirm RB as republican president. All should take heart for the LORD our God is in control.

Back a user friendly presido..but Membe has been myopic this time round…he has forgotten what LPM did to FTJ..He has forgotten who Sata is..and he wil meet and pay his dues regardless of who wins..he should have backed the PACT but he knows HH would never support a life line to relieve him of the money he owes to FBZ and DBZ…he has his knickers in a twist..

@Katanshi, I thought HH in that debate was far much articulate than Chipimo. Magande was brilliant and Miyanda was very practical but too slow. The problem is not HH or Magande but their tribe. Most of you bemba speaking guys will never see anything good in a tonga, lozi, luvale, lunda. You may see a little bit in Kaondes and Lambas because their languages are closer to yours. This tribe tag is becoming boring and counterproductive. Lets look at Zambians as human beings without that nonsense of tribe tags. Chipimo is a brilliant young man and I love his principles but dont promote him on the basis of tribe because you will end up destroying him. What if other tribes gang up against the bembas? Will this be acceptable? What about us who have parents of different tribes and we love our parents so much, what should we do? Should I abandon one of my parents so that I’m tribally right?
Yesterdays debate between Miyanda and HH was fantastic and I think it was appealing to most neutrals.I suggest that a party where Miyanda, Magande, HH, Chipimo, Mutesa, Milupi, Nawakwi are members be formed. This will spare some of us who are not inclined to slogan shouting without substance from unwarranted rhetoric.

Zed poor people, you are very wrong, you must be the only one still living in the tribalism error, not all of us that support pf are bemba or are from northern province, most of us are not even close to bemba land, but we are rational people we do not let tribe affect our choices as far as politics are concerned . i for one i support pf because it has the numbers to beat rb and his mmd, am lozi and i think hh is the better candidate but voting for him is the same as voting for mmd because he does not have the numbers to win this year’s election. i do not support mmd because of its un democratic tendencies and the arrogance of its leaders. so be informed my brother ZED POOR, its not just bembas supporting sata even lozis, tongas, north westerners, lenjes ,or in short all tribes in zambia are supporting sata because he has the numbers to win this year’s election, what the people don’t want is mmd and its arrogant rb to continue ruling this country after 20th september 2011

kk is used to this kind bahaviour of saying things and then refuting them later, he did the same kind of thing in 2005, when he said all zambians who didnt want the UDA, which was the aliance among UPND, UNIP and FDD to leave zambia at Anderson Mazoka’s funeral. ZNBC had to show a video recording showing the old kk saying the same thins he was refuting. so kk is just a coward, what is contained in that statement is the correct thing expected to come from a former head of state who is interested in the preservation of peace and unity of this country.
so you mmd vuvuzelas stop castigating mmembe he is just informing the nation of the happenings taking place in the country

I seem not to understand why PF supporters (a good portion) you fail to agree that you support Sata simply because he is bemba or is from Northen province.
