Opposition National Restoration Party (NAREP) president Elias Chipimo Junior has said the rebasing of the Kwacha will boost foreign and local confidence in the economy of Zambia.
Mr. Chipimo however said government should have a consistent, transparent and clear policy direction in order for the rebasing of the Kwacha to have meaningful impact
He was speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today.
Mr. Chipimo said rebasing of the Kwacha was costly hence the need to have stability in the government’s affairs.
He said the frequent reshuffling of ministers, deportation of foreigners, statutory instruments on trading only in Kwacha and the manner in which the minimum wage was introduced were suggesting instability in government affairs.
And Mr. Chipimo has said his party will contest the Mpongwe by-election even though such polls could have been avoided if political parties had put their houses in order.
And The Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) Executive Secretary Patson Phiri commended the media for the role it playing in the Kwacha rebasing exercise.
Mr. Phiri said the citizens of Zambia were informed about the rebasing of the Kwacha through the media’s hard work and accurate information.
He reaffirmed the media’s importance in politics saying no campaign would be successful without the active participation and coverage by the media.
Narep and Chipimo are here to stay and make next government. The problem with most of you is that you just want politics of insults, name calling and cheap opposing. This is 21st Century and Zambian Politics need to change in the Direction Narep is going. Mr Chipimo stay focussed and use criticism as oil to lubriate your engine to government and plot one. Copperbelt is behind you.

NAREP is satellite of the PF. Its aim is to cause confusion in the opposition. Chipimo knows he can not win anything but his aim is to carry the PF message while appearing credible.

u’r right abt building the parties but ddnt u thnk selfishness has also characterised our political parties? MMD,UPND,NAREP and other opposition parties will share votes giving PF an advantage. Wish we had one strong opposition political party, but alas democracy is at its peak in our mother Zambia.
Menyela - January 7, 2013
19:45
Indeed the splitting of votes may give PF a greater chance, and the fact that a party in government normally has an advantage in by-elections. However, the main problem for our nation is the presence of individuals among us that see it justifiable to support a failing party. I have always thought that a situation of three parties would eventually give us a health democracy. So I am looking forward to three parties establishing themselves for the future. In the meantime our problems will be with us for some time.

im not for Narep, noe i am for UPND. i knw most bloggers on this site are UPND sympathisers but my simple question is do you think UPND can win the mpongwe seat??? PF,MMD, UPND,NAREP are contesting. will UPND emerge victorious????
Menyela - January 7, 2013
19:04
While wining the seat would be desirable, we must not lose sight of the importance of building parties thru these by-elections. This may be the only chance for opposition political parties to articulate issues to the electorate in Mpongwe given the inhibition achieved thru the Public Order Act. I would encourage them to go ahead with a view of building up for the real thing in a few years, or earlier if the Lord so wishes.
Howling Wofl - January 7, 2013
19:17
i agree with you, build pipo’s confidence is wat these parties need to start doing. now at how votes will be split by the opposition.. UPND,MMD,NAREP will all share the votes giving an upper chance to PF. i think oppostion parties need to learn not to be selfish. The problem is that every leader of opposition thinks they can go to state house including Cosmo Mumba which is not da case….imagine if we had one opposition party what impact it wud have en the pressure it wud give to the ruling party, but alas democracy is at its peak in Zambia.

You see its not always about winning its making ground, mpongwe might not be won by upnd(most likely) but if they can do better by getting numbers they prepare a good foundation for 2016. If you think there are upnd sympathizers here, its because currently its the only variable option among the opposition, mmd is dead, narep is a disgrace and sold out to pf, the rest need i say anything. who else is there?and pf is worst of all parties, the status quo cant continue for the good of this country.

Narep’s Chipimo i hear is earmarked to take over from Sata and Winter seems not to be aware of this.
Chipimo has been contracted to stand bcoz other opposition parties have opted not to stand hence no vote spliting. But PF is worried that if opposition does not split the votes UPND will carry the day. This is how Chipimo was convinced to stand by the Powers that be.
Voters waste no time to vote for Cyborgs of PF they will offer no counter balance to the wrong decisions of the PF government

Chipimo Elias if u could only be genuine, you speak the same language as economic illiterates like sakeni and Chellah. Tell me what confidence does rebasing bring to the economy? If you want the economy to improve, export more goods than yapping.
If you could only stop dreaming that Sata will anoint you for president, yhen u could boadt your chances of becoming presido and seriously take on this PF. It might just be too late for you, because ULP, ADD, UPND & MMD might just form a formidable opposition to unseat PF.

Someone educate me please!Does rebasing of a currency improve an economy of a country whose primary, secondary, tertiary and quartenary industries are infancing? The only route in this era in questing for both economic growth and development is by increasing primary production, add value to the raw materials and jerk-up secondary production. In the African context Govt should be doing business in business and promote class one mixed econmic production. Go back to govt controlled demonstration primary production such as farming, mining, aquaculturing and many others.
Anyway there seems to be light at the end of the tunne.
