UPND will not stop escorting leaders to police stations- Siakalima

Political Advisor to UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has said UPND cadres will not stop escorting their party leaders to the Police Stations.

Mr. Douglas Siakalima has told the Zambia Watchdog that there is no law in Zambia that prescribes who and when to visit public places.

Mr. Siakalima said Police Stations just like government hospitals are public places and can’t be restricted areas.

He said the announcement by Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu was null and void because Zambia was not under a state of emergency.

He said even the time of one party dictatorship under President Kenneth Kaunda, Police stations were open to the public but only taking of photographs was restricted.

“It is a futile move, even the time of Kaunda the only sign you could see on police stations was photographing prohibited” he said.

Mr. Siakalima said the PF government will find its match in the UPND because it will not tolerate political chauvinism.

“Next time these people will be prescribing who and when to go to the hospital because government hospitals are just like police stations.

He also said President Sata as a dictator will end up badly together with his family because history has shown that dictators families also suffer.

He gave an example of  Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi, Mubarak and the former Tunisian president’s families that are now suffering because of their parents.

  2. Law is about interpretation, Mr advisor Siakalima. Laws will not describe any situation. Association likely to cause a breach of peace is a transgression. But if this is what you can get from an advisor, you wonder what kind of a party the advised run.

  12. They should continue escorting their leaders. It’s only right for Wynter to be escorted, to show solidarity, and wrong for UPND cadres, to be barred. No! This is unacceptable. If this continues, you will see more pan bricks. Careful ba police, you will die trying to follow orders when your bosses are safe in their homes.

  19. Msana wanzili, close uyo eyes for one minute and imagine this: The year is 2011 the home Affairs minister is Mukondo Lungu and RB is ruling. Mr. Sata is answering charges of some unlawful conduct on the C/belt at some mine plant there. Mr. Lungu not Edgar but Mukondo as Home Affairs minister announces that mr.sata should be reporting alone to an MMD compromised Police Force. As a PF die hard yourself, would u be comfortable with that? If our leader has assaulted his spouse, in such a case yes they can solve it as a family and police not these POLITICALLY MOTIVATED ARRESTS! It is political suicide to fail to offer solidarity to your leader summoned by PF Police. We can trust the Army and not these hungry police officers.

    Book worm - January 20, 2013
    15:23

    • Correction. The police force is not hungry, I can attest to that. But that’s a topic for another day. My point is that the current police force is uselessly incompetent since the dawn of zambia’s history. And all because you have a very incompetent police command.

  32. Douglas Siakalima, one of the few guys I respect in Zambia. I always thought, when he was a lecturer at UNZA and as UNZALARU vice-president, that this guy would one day walk the corridors of power. He has had his integrity intact to this day since his days as UNZALARU.

Yes there is no law that prohibits citizens from assembling and visiting public institutions. Besides the right to assembly is enshrined in the Constitution. LOL at the hospital analogy, so true!

The problem in Zambia is political leaders always think they own public institutions and property; that they are the most intelligent and the wisest of all the citizens… what a failed state this is!

  34. The problem is with our justice system its too rigid. In countries where people use brains characters like Siakalima instigating violence and anarchy are dealt with swiftly. I have always advocated for fast track courts to deal with political criminals. Courts should be flexible to even have night sessions to prosecute cadres arrested escorting their leaders and it should be quick.

  45. Very simple. Stop summoning political leaders to the police for flimsy and cooked up accusations. As long as the safety of their leaders is not guaranteed then supporters will always escort their leaders to show solidarity. What’s next? Family members will be banned from escorting their relatives to the police station?
