Ghana move above Zambia in World Cup qualifiers after win over Lesotho
Goals from defender John Boye and Asamoah Gyan helped the Black Stars to cruise to the impressive victory in Maseru against a very stubborn Lesotho side, giving the West Africans the advantage in the group.
The Black Stars have now toppled Zambia at the top of the group with a one point lead after the desperate were held to a shock 1-1 draw against Sudan in Ndola on Saturday.
Ghana knew victory in Maseru will better their chances of progressing to the final qualifying round and did not disappoint.
After reeling under pressure in the opening 40 minutes, the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists opened the scoring against the run of play.
AC Milan ace Sulley Muntari dinked in a free-kick which was headed on by Jonathan Mensah for centre-back John Boye to finish off.
The visitors held onto the lead to go into the break the happier of the two sides.
Also, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu substituted Muntari as coach Kwesi Appiah sought to sore up the midfield following incessant second-half attacks from the home side.
The strategy by the Black Stars coach paid off as they regained control of the midfield to create opportunities for the Ghanaian attackers.
Lesotho coach Leslie Notsi was forced to replace first choice goalkeeper Mohau Kuenane just after the hour mark for picking up an injury.
Phasumane Kholuoe took his position and in the 85th minute he picked up a ball from his net after failing to stop Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan.
Gyan was set up by Kwadwo Asamoah as the striker’s first shot was blocked by the goalkeeper before the Black Stars responded by diving to to head in the winner.
Ghana now need a draw against Zambia at home in September to advance to the third qualifying round of the qualifiers.
