How come only Lozis, Bembas and Tongas are heard in tribalism talk?

Dear Editor, It will be highly appreciated if my article is published.

It is so common that time and time we read articles in our newspapers about tribalism. More interesting is always among the three tribes Bembas, Tongas and Lozis pointing at each other that that one is more tribal than the other. Imagine my fellow readers out of 72 tribes it sound as if there are the only Zambians we have. However have we ever stopped and reflect what goes on in the minds those who are not among the three tribes? In the spirit of One Zambia and One Nationother tribes accepted to use other languages in schools and on national radio. It was really a sacrifice remember that any language not taught and spoken dies.

Out of 72 tribes only seven languages where chosen to be taught and used on national radios that is Bemba, Chewa, Tonga, Luanda, Luvale and lozi. If we observe well will see that each language chosen in each province was imposed by one language and only north-western has two but was not an easily one had to fight over it. Although some argued that other languages where similar to the one chosen is not valid argument in all circumstances. For example was lunda spoken luapula similar to the bemba which was imposed? Or is tumbuka in Miyobe similar to Bemba? Is namwanga and Mambwe similar to Bemba? Is chokwe similar to Luvale?

Right now we cannot do a good similarity because these languages have lost a lot that are so mixed up with the language which was imposed in the areas. My point aim not saying was bad idea but that was a great sacrifice to let go our languages now whoever spokes is identified and classified as one of that language spoken that every time we see musonda and mumba we straightforward conclude is a Bemba.

The other interesting we have classified politics in tribes where did it start from, why can’t we campaign on principals than on tribal. Right now there are lot of lies which has been spoken among the three tribes to proof the point that the other one is really tribal. Furthermore we will ever hear more during campaign times.

Analyser yo comment is short of any analytical quality. The author of the artical 2 wrote this artical based on his language or tribe. The author shud have studied the the composition of these tribes before with this good but bad researched artical. The Tonga group consists of the Bantu Botatwe tribes and these are Tonga,Lenje and Ila.This also has small tribes like the Toka leya that have willfuly accept 2 be part of the Bantu Botatwe. The situation in Barotseland is similar though slightly different in d sense that the pipo or tribes of Barotseland came up wt a common language 2 use and that is LOZI.Lozi is mixture of so many dialects from difernt tribes and not a tribe my friend, its a language. YOu have Totela, Kwangwa,Makoma jst 2 mention a few all proudly calling themselves Lozis.I can not coment on d kolwestans i dont know how they came to being. To cut de long story short, of the three groups mentioned in artical, there is only one group that always calling the others as triblist these are the kolwestans.

  2. CNP-4U  December 11, 2012 at 14:01

as usual the most rtibal are the kolwestans who want to claim as though they are perfect ones..they have brought alot of division..look at how pf is operating..useless..

What else do you want to know about the languages in Zambia? This was a complete lecture on the languages of Zambia. I want to encourage the Grade 7s and 9s of tomorrow year to cut this one as study notes for their exams. This article has been brilliant and has brought a lot of issues to the fore. This is what we call good communication and debate for all to understand.

  4. Chilufyanya Satana  December 11, 2012 at 13:53

It all starts with Bembas, they want to impose there laguage in zambia,Hence the Tongas nd Lozis are the only tribes who have proudly resisted this. That is why they are labled as being tribal.

    • Africa  December 11, 2012 at 13:26

You are spot on. Mwamba said Kasama is for Bembas when Emmanuel Kasonde contested on National Party Ticket in Malole in 1996 Sata told the people thre that Kasonde is selling you to the Lozis.

my country has been torn down by these tribal disputes and especially the three mentioned tribes.if not checked may resurrect the 1994 genocide in rwanda, why dont we learn as africans?good thing is that the “catalysts” westerners dont have interest in us turning against each other like in other countries,am from a tribe which is not among the three and wont disclose for objectivity and i can tell you that my tribe was among if not the 1st to settle in zambia and welcomed these 3 tribes when they were running away from wars long time ago and there fight for dorminance comes from a fact that it is from there fore fathers fear and insecurity of being wiped out which doesnt exist now.we are a free people we can live as brothers where name doesnt define who one is or can be and that will take our nation far, currently we have a modern enemy the war between lusaka people and copperbelt people with the barotse issue,if one place is not developed its zambia that loses out and the national pride is jeopardised, imagine if all provinces gained independence next thing it will be cities, then towns, districts, till we become no people like israel was…….shame on us all for such tribal issues,May GOD deliver us

1)Many businesmen who are bembas drive very expensive vehicles.
2)SDA popular in Southern is a cult.
3)Those you see driving expensive vehicles working in parastals get the vehicles on LOAN.
4)Even if one drives an altezza, do you make these vehicles in barotse or southern P?
      5)Have you built a house?
6)Manchester always win but am Arsenal as a bemba
8)Most police officers are actually poor lozis and drive toyota progreses and in southern, Toyota COWROLLA. The majority of bembas are Lusaka as well.

The founders of black politics in zambia are Lozis -NATIONAL CONGRESS-AC under Nalumino Mundia followed by Tongas -AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS-ANC under Nkumbula . After Nalumino was arrested his party joined ANC. .KK was introduced into politics by NKUMBULA in Kitwe as Nkumbula was on his way to Luapula. KK formed his party Zambia congress party which died after he was arrested Later Mainza Chona formed UNIP. When KK was realised from prison he joined UNIP where he become a secretary general nd later on a leader as Mainza Chona humbled himself. Later on KK and Nkumbula made a coalition where KK was appointed as Leader which made the white government lose. After winning election KK made Kamanga as his V/president instead of Nkumbula or Mainza Chona. After Kamanga he again apointed his childhold friend S. Kapwepwe as his V/P. Kapwepwe went round telling the people that a Tonga whose nose like cow can not be the V/president or president he started discriminating even the people from N/western and Western provinces which led war between UNIP and ANC. Kapwepwe’s tribalism made the people of Western,Southern and N/Western hate KK as well.(The rise of Mushala rebellion). To gain confidence KK made sure that Kapwepwe was fired. After he was fired he formed his Party UPP which was rejected by most Zambian until his death in 1978.KK was was again accepted after he fired Kapwepwe. In 1972 Mainza Chona and Nkumbula me in Choma to have ANC died according to KK’s request.Tongas humbled themselves again.
In 1991 MMD was formed again under a Lozi man Arthur Wina and humbled himself as Chiluba was voted as a president. The first UNIP MINISTERS TO BE FIRED for supporting Chiluba were Tongas Vincent Malambo , the late Nalumina and Ben Mwiinga. Tongas ,Lozis and N/Westerners all voted for Chiluba except Eastern province. In 1998 Sata as MMD party secretary blocked Mazoka to stand as an MP in Lusaka Central and told him to form Tonga party if he wants leadership. When UPND was formed Sata was quated in Daily mail that “Finally a Tonga party has been formed where all will speake Tonga”. Mazoka left MMD because of Sata ‘s tribal descrimination over Mazoka. In 2001 all those 22 MP who resigned from MMD never supported Mazoka as they campaigned against him on tribal line. Even Sata in 2006 he was quated saying ” Don’t vote for a Tonga president Mazoka because he will bring cows in Lusaka. Today after Mazoka has died this Sata and Nawakwi are saing Mazoka was a good Man. So a Tonga, lozi and N/westeners only become good after they die. This is an insult to Tonga people-If he was good why did’t they vote for him.
Tribalism in politics is when you vote for tribesman who was once rejected by the people for supporting bad president and his bad policies in the previous government. If you happen to support that person when he forms a party because he is your tribesman you should bear in mind that other people or tribes will CONTINUE hating that one base on his past behaviour in government. As long as we bring our tribesmen recycled politicians with defects behaviour who were once rejected the who country, tribalism wont end. Let us learn from what happened in 1991, we never picked a defected recycled politician instead we came up with a new politician who could unite all tribes. Those who vote for their tribesmen who were once rejected in politics are the one who are tribalist. There is nothing wrong to vote for your tribesman whose record in politics is good.
Kapwepwe no matter how much he be honoured by his tribesmen president history will always reveal that he was the father of tribalism in Zambia folloewd by Sata.
Bembas and all those tribes which have produced presidents learn to appreciate what the Lozis,N/Westerners and the Tongas did. Mind you, UNIP and ANC formed by Tongas came up with Independence,MMD formed by Lozi came up with multipartism through humility. Where UNIP was formed it is where UPND was formed.

    • beeds  December 11, 2012 at 12:13

Bemba’s have personalised Zambia and are not willing to share with other tribes. This agression will only breed more agression, and needs to be checked soon, otherwise this country will be on fire.

    • Lewanika_founded_ANC  December 11, 2012 at 13:08

The first sentence is factually wrong. The man who founded African National Congress, the first political party in Barotseland/Northern Rhodesia was King Lewanika around 1912, not Mundia Nalumino. Bo Nalumbino is a ‘baby’ who came rather late, although not later than KK or Nkumbula.

May be the author was meant to say founders of ‘contemporary’ or ‘mainstream’ or ‘modern’ politics. But even in modern politics, the Northern Rhodesia Congress (NRC) was founded by Godwin Lewanika, and not Mundia Nalumino. Always good to get facts right. Check Wikipedia on Northern Rhodesia Congress (NRC).

Arthur Wina started and formed MMD; Arthur Wina, Aka and Humphrey Mulemba again formed ‘National Party; and eventually Aka started Agenda for Zambia.

CNP truly started PF on his own :)

      • KING ATASe!  December 11, 2012 at 14:35

        1. ANC, the first formal party in Northern Rhodesia, was formed not by King Lewanika or Nalumino Mundia, but by Godwin Mbikusita Lewanika, son of King Lewanika and himself later a Litunga.

        2. NW Province is the only province with more than one language on ZNBC. In fact it has three: KiKaonde, Luvale and Lunda. I assume this is because these languages, although spoken by far fewer people, are so different that they cannot comprehend each other. NWP has the least population and voters in the country.

        • Lewanika_founded_ANC  December 11, 2012 at 15:19

Yes @ King ATASe, Godwin Lewanika formed that the first formal party in N/Rhodesia. I have stated that above. That was around 1948, relatively recent.

However, in 1912 African National Congress of South Africa appointed King Lewanika as honorary vice President of the African National Congress in recognition of his stance for Barotse self-determination.

That was the beginning of party politics in Barosilandi. That is a piece of history that not many people know about.

D.S. CHIBS, why is that Mainza Chona had to give up the president position to a “bemba speaking” person, even Arthur Wina? why do bemba speaking people end up with leadership role? once you find the answers and you adopt them, then you are on your way to have a Tonga or Lozi president. the start point for your research read what comment Livingstone wrote about Bembas. Lozi and Tongas, had a lot of opportunities to produce a president (infact they among the first people to be educated in this region). what is the issue?

Language identifies who you are and it plays a major role in making one understand and learn new things if used and promoted by teaching children in their mother tongue even in schools. That said, the author should use effective forums to advocate for use of all ethnic languages in schools so that people will not be alienated from their cultures. It is expensive to rewrite or produce books and other teaching/learning materials but it is investment worth making and prioritizing if good performance is to be witnessed in schools. However, this does not mean tribalism should be supported because it is important to live side by side and learn from one another.Under the three major languages, there are dialects that also need to be promoted. The other way to avoid conflicts is to coin a new universal local language though not easy.Nevertheless,no one should claim that their language is easy to speak just because many people use it without considering oppressive factors that led to that.

Lozis have developed a persecution syndrome, no brothers there schools with grass roofing in Shangombo and Chinsali! An isolated good school in Chipata doesn’t mean they are good schools everywhere!

I think the author was drive a certain point but s/he lost his/her thought along the way. There’s need to explore further this subject matter. As Zambians let’s continue discussing these issues beacuse alot of people have bottling them close to their chests for along it. But remember not to use these important debates for wrong reasons such as disadvantaging others because of their ethnicity. Quick advise to the Editor to do some justice to the articles and cross-reference some arguments presented before publishing them. The poor grammar reflects badly on the editor too as much its an online publication it’s your responsibility to publish well presented articles

How many Lozi’s or Tongas on the copperbelt speak Bemba and equally how many Bembas in Mongu or Choma speak the local languages? The point is Bembas always look down on other tribes.I lived among them for over 20 years. They have no respect whatsoever.Under God we are all equal. The resoureces of the country have to be shared equally.

  36. Just Lozi  December 11, 2012 at 10:14

One thing you shud understand with the Lozis is that it is a different country. Dont ignore that. Even if you want kill that always remember Zambia is made out of 2 countries. All Zambian Presidents came from Northern Rhodesia and MOT even one from Barotseland hence so they look after their side well and neglect US making us the poorest part of the unitary zambia. (Do you think you can develop your neighbor’s plot leaving yours?) And when when we raise our concern you mistake us for being tribalist. We are not.

  38. Ba Mwisho  December 11, 2012 at 10:13

One suggestion, to address all this tribal talks and language issues, I suggest that we hire Dr Kashoki (a guru in linguistics) and his team to come up with a Zambian language that adopts words from different languages to come up with one local language that would be tought in all schools and spoken on radio and TV. So for example, the word water could come from chewa (Manzi), eyes from lozi (Meto), thank you from Kaonde (tinasakulila mwane) and so on. This way we shall satisfy everyone eventually!!!

    • kangwa  December 11, 2012 at 10:17

Bemba is already widely spoken and understood by most zambians iwe.

      • matako matako  December 11, 2012 at 11:13

yes yes kolwestans at it again!!!!

      • Wanzelu  December 11, 2012 at 14:27

        Dream on.

  39. mike  December 11, 2012 at 10:11

It is very simple. One reason is that bembas label any non-bemba who speaks his native language as a tribalist and only Tongas and Lozis do this in Bemba speaking areas e.g on the CB.In Lsk where Nyanja is the Lingua Franca, you will not be labelled a tribalist if you speak Lozi to your fellow Lozi unless there are Bembas nearby. One other thing is Bembas wanting to speak their language and assuming its universal and everyone knows it and if you use English they label you as “some of us”.This is very common in Copperbelt’s smaller towns. That’s why people in these areas speak terrible english. The refusal by Bembas to vote for a tonga has also contributed greatly to this perceived tribalism.Check the results for the 2001 elections by province.

    • Fenwick  December 11, 2012 at 11:43

Good analysis Mike! It’s copper-belt has the worst English speakers..

    • Mei Matungu  December 11, 2012 at 16:18

Mike, it’s every election. Bemba vote has always been tribal. Thanks to the Bemba gods.

  40. Gundown  December 11, 2012 at 10:07

It is because these tribes have a rich cultural heritage which they do not want to lose. You can add Ngonis to that list.
But the fight between Lozis and Bembas started when both tribes were in Congo. The bembas forced a child born from a servant to be Mwatayamvwa instead of the son to the queen then Mbuyuwamwambwa. This fight is now Genetic this time.

    • Musatanyo  December 11, 2012 at 14:16

How true is your statement give evidence not everyone who visits this website is from the bush moreover a weblink to substantiate your claims.

      • Gundown  December 12, 2012 at 08:44

Mbuyuwamwambwa fled or left out of anger and settled in the current day Angola. Her son decided to expand their territory and settled in the present day Zambia -Lukulu and Mongu. After that he invited the other group to leave Angola and Join him. When they did, the other son whose name I have forgotten also went on a conquest, were he conquered the Lenjes, solis and Lambas and he died in the Congo. That’s were his grave is. If you want to find out more go and ask Elders in Mumbwa, Chibombo and at Chief Nkana’s palace.

        • Musatanyo  December 12, 2012 at 15:09

Iwe provide a web link hearsay is not enough,It is as good as saying two gay men had aroot and one farted a baby out of their anus.

    • Mei Matungu  December 11, 2012 at 16:21

Zambia needs more historians like you.

    • mushota  December 12, 2012 at 00:54

the king must have been a hule even servants were relish am not surprised if it is true only a black man can behave immorally thanks

  41. Homer Simpson  December 11, 2012 at 09:57

It seems like the author was heading down a good path but the vocab and grammar?!! Please proof-read next time Mr. Musonda.

    • mwine mushi  December 11, 2012 at 10:08

Which school did he go to? If ever he went to any?

      • Mei Matungu  December 11, 2012 at 16:25

Good schools are a priviledge of the few. I presume you went to a good school and yet you are displaying small-mindedness by segregating against those who had no chance of attending a good school.

  42. Master Dribbler  December 11, 2012 at 09:57

My initial comments have been completely blocked. Why?

    • Umkonto We Sizwe  December 11, 2012 at 10:37

You name also. You have been dribbled.

  43. kim  December 11, 2012 at 09:55

It is simple. It started with Bembas labelling any non-bemba who speaks his/her mother language as a tribalist. Only Tongas and Lozis speak their mother language among themselves in public places. When did you last here Kaondes or Luvales conversing in their languages on the Copperbelt or Lusaka?

    • Kantolo  December 11, 2012 at 10:19

I agree with you totally…Lozis and Tongas have said NO to manipulation.

      • Mei Matungu  December 11, 2012 at 16:28

Bembas have been waging a language warfare on the rest of the other tribes.

  44. Master Dribbler  December 11, 2012 at 09:55

Bad English and poor research. For instance NWP has three major languages that are national : Lunda, Luvale and Kaonde. The writer left out Luvale and mispelt Lunda. The gross grammatical mistakes and poor knowledge on language comparisons has killed off an otherwise what was meant to be a very good article and point of discussion

    • Mei Matungu  December 11, 2012 at 16:31

Master Dribbler, the writer has at least been able to write and publish an article. You haven’t. We look forward to a better written one from you soon.

  45. enzo  December 11, 2012 at 09:54

which lunda is spoken in luapula? there is no lunda in luapula, luapulans speak bemba. chokwe, mbunda and luvale are very similar (just like bantu botatwe)

    • Mei Matungu  December 11, 2012 at 16:33

What a disgrace that the Lundas of Luapula no longer speak their own language in preference for Chibemba!

  46. Linguist  December 11, 2012 at 09:48

Mr. Musonda J, who cares what language your mother tongue is but you for one definitely need to get a better grasp of English. Work on your grammar before you start posting articles on internationally read websites. Editor, are you asleep on the job?

    • mwine mushi  December 11, 2012 at 10:05

Seems Editor allows mediocrity on their media.

  47. ZK  December 11, 2012 at 09:45

Very good observation. But I feel it is because they are the ones in the forefront in most decision making processes, be it Political, economical, social, cultural and even in crime related issues, they are more prone.

  48. bongo man  December 11, 2012 at 09:44

…bembas r never tribal, the hatred comes in coz we have had bemeba presidents. u wil never hear bembas talking or chasing other tribes unlike these two tongas n lozis. so do not drag bembas in these shallow cheap n primitive discussions. bembas intaract with any tribe n r easily mingle

    • Liminabanganga  December 11, 2012 at 10:20

You are wrong! I once looked kept Bemba man who had nowhere to stay here in the diapora. I gave him food and shelter for six months until he found his feet. Then, to my utter horror, this guy had the nerve to say in my presence after he met his fellow Bembas that ‘umulozi teti a teke Zambia pantu bali itemwa sana’. I have never heard that kind of talk from a Tonga person.

      • Liminabanganga  December 11, 2012 at 10:27

That is supposed to read ‘ I once kept a Bemba man…

    • kangwa  December 11, 2012 at 10:20

we even marry their sisters and daughters

      • Muunga a matwi abacizakala  December 11, 2012 at 10:40

Because they dance better in bed and are sweet, bemba girls lie like a log and just scratch u all over.

  49. Vilifier  December 11, 2012 at 09:41

The Tonga tribalism tag is one of the greatest scandals contrived by a few individuals at the Post and PF, just to block political enemies.

For a tonga to vote for a credible, successful and intelligent candidate like Mazoka or HH its viewed as more tribal than for a Bemba to vote for a unscrupulous, incompetent and dishonest person like Sata.

Just check out the current tribalism in PF, but they are still get soft criticism.

    • Boogie  December 11, 2012 at 10:02

There you go again. Much as the the grammar in the above article is not up to scratch, the guy has a point. You are already exhibiting here tribal sentiments without even getting the rationale of the article. Why can’t you,for once, think with your brain than your tribe.

      • Vilifier  December 11, 2012 at 10:42

You are right I should have read the article, but hello I am the VILIFIER!!!!!

      • james  December 11, 2012 at 10:48

      • Chwechwe will be back  December 11, 2012 at 13:42

You know people, Sata is the one forcing all of us to be tribal. I personally have started hating most Bemba speakers because of their similar imperialistic mind.

  50. GMT  December 11, 2012 at 09:39

When an article is written without due regard to good and appropriate vocabulary, and grammar, all the good intentions are lost in that mere lack of communicability! Even your trusted friend can be a very good editor! Good observation though!

    • mwine mushi  December 11, 2012 at 09:58

I agree! The writer mentions that seven languages were were chosen to be taught and yet lists only six. He leaves out Kaonde and says North Western province has two (instead of three)!! Tumbuka is not similar to Bemba but one who speaks Tumbuka can at least grasp some Chewa or Nyanja. Maybe Namwanga and Mambwe are a valid point. However, please you should not show your ignorance on this forum. If not competent to communicate in English, you may decide to use another language or better ask someone competent to edit your postings! I mean, you even highlight disgustingly wrong grammar sentence such as “Right now, there are a lot of lies which HAS been spoken among the the three tribes to PROOF the point that THE OTHER ONE is tribal. How disgusting. Also shows the level of some contributors on this blog.
