Kantobo miners demonstrate in Kitwe

Miners from Kantobo mine in Masaiti Saturday morning staged  demonstratration and alomost  rioted at the District Commissioners Office in Kitwe over the non-payment of two months salaries by the Kantobo mine management.
The miners earlier blocked the road between DCs office(BOMA building) and Stanbic Bank prompting the riot-geared police officers swing into action to stop the event from becoming a full blown riot.

The miners who comprise mostly the Kasama residents have been lodging on the corridors of the DCs office for over one week now complained of negligence by the government in intervening the situation which has left them to be beggars and street adults. The miners further complained that their families are suffering  where they come from.

Kitwe DC Kamanga was seen moving up and down trying to calm the situation as thE impatient miners pressed had to try to enter the building where the DCs office is.

Unfortunately govt is the biggest culprit in issues of that nature. There are so many retired civil servants in this country that have not been paid what they worked for over 30yrs.Some of us retired almost 12months ago, and the govt has not paid our pension, leave days terminal benefits, repartriation allowances etc; and yet these kaponyas from kasama are already crying foul for just missing two months salaries…Ba PF and MMD are the same in terms of mistreating retirees. So far so worse nothing has changed ever since we removed the corrupt MMD .So I don’t know how chief culprit (govt_)would sort out that issue when actually it has failed to pay Pension to retirees on time.Just imagine my files with all the documents in place took 7months to move from Provincial Administration (via the inefficient PSMD)to Public service Penions Fund Offices in Lusaka.Up to date Iam not paid and yet the powers that be are busy gallavanting all over the globe with their spouses amidst hefty salaries and subsistence allowances. So those miners who went to demostrate at Kitwe DC’s office are wasting their time. What can DC Kamanga do? That mine is a private company and NOT a govt department for the DC to force it pay delayed salaries. The biggest problem with political cadres masquerading as civil servants in govt offices is that they always want to promise to build bridges where there no rivers.I rest my case.

The person behind the mine scandal is chipaila a well known crook and the police should quickly arrest him and his accomplises including the ka chief.Govt should find a genuine investor to take over the mine and re employ the swindled youths coz the area has rich mineral deposits

  19. Sena  September 29, 2012 at 14:17

Some mines are not mines and people are just used as laborers. I believe the government must scrutinize all mine licenses holders to see who they corroborate with.
