Late president Mwanawasa family fight for estate

Late President, Dr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa’s older children, Miriam and Rona have accused Mrs. Maureen Mwanawasa of depriving them their father’s multi –billion estate.

The children have also stated that they will instruct lawyers to sue Mrs. Mwanawasa and the Administrator of the estate on Monday. The legal action is aimed at recovering their share of the estate.

In a statement issued by the late president’s children on Saturday in Lusaka, they accused Mrs. Maureen Mwanawasa of benefitting from the assets of their father and keeping the wealth and estate to herself and her biological children.

Miriam and Rona accused Mrs. Mwanawasa of collecting K800million from Cabinet Office, contributions made by Zambians towards the funeral and keeping it to herself to the exclusion of all the children and the Mwanawasa’s family.

The children stated that Mrs. Mwanawasa merely gave them an amount of K15million only shortly after the burial of Dr. Mwanawasa.

The children demanded that the written Will be executed as outlined and their share given as stated by Dr. mwanawasa Will

Miriam also accused Maureen of preventing her to lay a wreath as daughter of the late president child during the burial of her father on September 3rd 2008. Lorna was also prevented from leaving the Copperbelt University where she was studying then, and could not join the family for her father’s funeral.

Mrs. Mwanawasa refused to comment and referred all queries to the executor of the estate.

Dr. Mwanawasa was third president of the Republic of Zambia. He died at Percy Military Hospital in France on August 19th 2008. He had suffered a stroke two months earlier whilst at Sharma Sheik, Egypt for the African Union Summit.

As a widow, Mrs. Mwanawasa is entitled to a salary for life of the 50% of the incumbent president’s salary. Cabinet office has also extended benefits such accommodation, her upkeep, security and drivers.

The children; Miriam, Patrick and Lorna are from Dr. Mwanawasa’s earlier marriage with Mrs. Ann Ziba Mwanawasa. He divorced her in 1988 to marry Maureen. With Maureen, Dr. Mwanawasa had Chipo, Lubona and Ntembe.

Maureen’s children have taken centre stage in collaborating and organizing the memorials of Dr. Mwanawasa.

His eldest son, Patrick has taken in interest in politics and following the father’s footsteps. He is currently eyeing the Kafulafuta seat in Mpongwe, Ndola Rural. This seat is currently held by George Mpombo who is a strong critic of President Rupiah Banda but has been expelled by the MMD.

Recently Mrs. Mwanawasa accused government on the BBC of giving her meager benefits. She quickly regretted her statement when government disclosed the exorbitant costs they have spent on her, her welfare and her children.

Chapwe Tumelo …Divorcing a wife after riding her on your bicycle when you had no job, nothing & decide to ditch a wife just because money knows you now. You hav moral issues to deal with or risk losing reputation in your career ‘An eye of an eagle’ is watching. See how the mwanawasa’s are fighting, its becoz of the decsions LPM made in the past..Am sure he would have regretted if he heard!

I hope Maureen she is reading these comments, my personal advise to Muaureen is that money is never enough, as a matter of fact freinds, relatives and social network is more important than money, she should find value in family than money, money can finish any time and she will not live forever that she will always be with her children today, those children that she pushing away her children will need them one day. each one of us has his/her day, her day or fortune its not her childrens day or fortune, if you have today dont think you will still have tommorow – selfishness will not take you anywhere – we cannot just spend our time on a reasonable and educated person like you and you learn nothing – its the greedness that a hunter died under the weight of an elephant, he was not satisfied and he wanted to carry the whole elephant home. Nizako izo this is free advise.

Looking at this stuation, morally speaking it is not the time to look at who is wrong or right. This is time to look for the amicable solution to the problem so that the Soul of our Late Beloved Presedent Mwanawasa rest in eternal Peace. We hoped for the Presedent and God gave us a servant like the late Presedent. I would urge the public to look at this issue critically and Pray for God’s intervantions. With these few remarks may the Soul of our Beloved Presedent Rest in Peace, and I would say may God’s will be Done and God Bless the Zambian People.

maybe there is a legal explanation Miriam and Lorna are missing here, being a lawyer Mureen is, my wildest guess is she  has made an interpretation that her biological children are more important  than those from Levy’s earlier marriage. Its shocking that she wants to hold on to those billions.

  12. ibrahim  November 17, 2010 at 11:46

indeed Chapwe Tumelo is adisgace to the Engineering fratenity. One wonders how a man who was riding a bicycle carrying his wife can now boast to be a billionaire just overnight. The man shud quickly be investigated and prosecuted 4 corruption. We know the companies he is using. One was just recently awarded a dubious contract on the Copperbelt. ZWD pliz help save us from this scandalous man.

  13. yaba  November 17, 2010 at 11:18

Am told its True from close associates within RDA..his lifestyle is in a Total mess. What an embarassment to the ones we look up to as role models. Its an embarassment to the entire RDA.I pity him.

  14. cleo  November 17, 2010 at 11:08

ZWD, let us know who Chapwe Tumelo thinks he is.. It seems he has really got some immoral issues in his dealing with his life..I think there is more with his life and i think he needs to be xposed & dealt with..remember the Kapoko saga, its the same. The corruption in RDA is making these guys become Big headed by enslaving their wives to torture & torment. Look to what happened to the mwanawasa’s & pick samthing 4rm there..Anyway, i skim his issues (Chapwe Tumelo) are nothing but the truth becoz his earlier comments he (Chapwe Tumelo) posted have been removed & that alone speaks volumes. Let us know.

  15. Relx  November 17, 2010 at 08:14

I have noticed the posts by Chapwe or whoever it was that bloged yesterday have been removed. I followed the cross fire closely and really Chapwe myt have seroius skeletons in his closet… by the way we all do, but this is the wrong forum to discuss his dirt. Peace!!!

  17. mwaba  November 16, 2010 at 16:35

correction! meant @mwenda and not @mwaba in my comment…sorry with myself. lol…..!

  18. mwenda  November 16, 2010 at 16:30

@Disgusted observer, Didnt you write ‘i work with Chapwe…..’ if you work with him 4rm Northern Province then , he is your superior & u playing ‘muzungu anikonde’ unless u tel me its working with him from other provinces but same RDA with same position. Tell the truth & be sincere with what you say so the fellow bloggers know whats cutting & not play tit 4 tat. PEACE! FORZA ZWD!

  19. mwaba  November 16, 2010 at 16:13

Intresting events happening on ZWD. Is this what money can do surely? Changing sam1 after ‘money knows him’…Hop the lot comes to an end for this estate issue for the mwanawasa’s. @mwaba, spit everything so us to know all. Hop the ZWD is keeping an eye on this Chapwe Tumelo saga. News for you ZWD..! Update us on this issue, it would be interesting to know the truth as you always do in updating us.

  20. Disgusted Observer  November 16, 2010 at 16:13

@ Mwenda, You are mistaken, you can only play muzungu anikonde if that “muzungu” is your superior. Issue is if you are man enough, come out and confront the man. Dont hide behind these blogs and drag up issues which do not concern all the pipo here. Again, what really is your point in bringing up this issue here. Hoping bloggers will sort him out for you? Anyway, am not his spokesperson but mine was just to point out your malice in your postings which you unwittingly admit. peace!!

  21. mwenda  November 16, 2010 at 15:58

@disgusted obsever , this issue does not concern us all but hey, lets learn samthing 4rm here..the truth should be known and xposed. dont play sam muzungu anikonde here. Mind you, there are people on the ground and are watching very closely..starting from the brawl resulting in him assaulting the workmate lady to junior officers complaining about his hostility towards supervision. Mind you all this, people know & following closely.

  22. Tony Montana  November 16, 2010 at 09:15

Who is Chapwe and how is he involved in the Mwanawasa saga?I bet it is some disgrunted girlfriend trying to fix Chapwe.

  23. Disgusted Observer  November 16, 2010 at 08:53

I work with chapwe. I can vouch that he has not posted anything on this blog but some people with a hateful agenda are trying to ridicule him by making his personal life a public spectacle. He could be having sum marital problems but surely will it benefit anybody to make it a subject of this blog. If really you have some issues to sort out with him why not sit down with him. Mwenda and the person claiming to be chapwe are one and the same person. These people are taking advantage of the current anonymity status of the Zambianwatchdog. This cant continue and eventually the veil will be lifted.

With all due respect Mrs Mwanawasa, please allow the children of the first wife to our late prsident their dues.they will be the ones in the future keeping little Lubona and the rest.the bembas say “usunga umwana teshibikwa”no one knows who will keep their children. You have more than enough money the government is still paying you and you have other privellages aswell.

  26. mwenda  November 16, 2010 at 07:15

Its a pity people have now resorted to self praise, over doing something which i think is seen as being sinister by any sane person. Am reliably informed by one of my freind who is also holding a senior position in cabinet office 4rm kasama that YES, Chapwe Tumelo divorced the wife who he suffered with when he had no Job, nothing & that ALAS he changed his mind after notching a few kwachas from then Roads dept to now RDA. Its very sad that its a trend he’s taken. There is also rumour on the ground that a child he had outside marriage b4 he divorced the wife is not his which he constantly enies despite being reliably informed on the matter. Also believed that a woman who bore him a child is a waitress with a track record of high level harloting & abortions. Surely, these are the leaders we have with no morals. Having children from the same wife solves the impass like what has happened to the mwanawasa’s is a leson to us all.

@Chapwe Tumelo, mwakasenda personal, may be you in those vices….let us know you guys. who is who here? ZWD, update us on this thing in RDA. Does it mean it will always be prostitution here, prostitution there? Much to be desired. But its great shame if thats what you lead your life chapwe.. Check your morrows! Even if its divorcing sam1, its not a solution. Lesson to all of us (about Mwanawasa divorcing before) who think can hold the world in there own hands that divorcing is not a solution but a problem.

  29. Young leaders alliance(YOLA).  November 15, 2010 at 16:52

Whether old or young your father remains your father and your entitlement remains yours. The person 2 blame is mrs mwanawasa, she has failed 2 b a mother & provide guidance 2 levy’s children .This is the biggest failure!!

  30. peter p  November 15, 2010 at 14:59

please havent we had enough drama from this family? why cant they find something to do rather than spend money on legal fees. they should start by saying how much they got and how much they think they should have received from the ‘multi-billion’ estate

  31. Na Mpundu  November 15, 2010 at 14:33

Ba Maureen na imwe just share the money bwino.. Those were Levy’s children as well and even if they were over 5oyrs umwana takulila abafyashi. Let the love of God flow in the Family and peace prevail. You all need each other, money or without. Dont alienate your Biological Children from the others. You never know who will need the other one day. God changes destinies each day.

  32. Blackmuntu  November 15, 2010 at 13:01

maureen is also a selfish woman..why does he want to have everything when she’s still getting paid..even the children should learn to grow and be self-reliant..

  33. Mandingo  November 15, 2010 at 11:10

sorry i ask because they don’t spend when in power and continue to receive when they come out

  34. Mandingo  November 15, 2010 at 11:10

what is a presidents salary for?

  35. joe tall  November 15, 2010 at 10:37

the prisident is a public employee, when he retires or dies he or she should be paid in similar manner as any other public servant meaning that the widow/widower should not be paid a salary for life in comparison or so with the sitting president . However for security reasons they may continue to recieve state protection just like any citizen who may be under posible threat. Till we reach this stage we will be creating imbalances in the society .Thats my opinion.

  36. sifeka ni siyambula  November 15, 2010 at 10:05

The former president’s emoluments Act should be revised. There is too much money paid out to an already rich family. Why pay a widow a life salary when she is already paid hefty benefits on top of abused resources ? If we are a serious people this is the Act that needed revision and not the abuse of office clause in the ACC Act.

  37. Voice of Reason  November 15, 2010 at 09:27

It’s sad to see family laundry in public, worse still the former 1st family. Zambia has far bigger problems. She’s a lawyer, let a friend arbitrate or something. No one really cares about this, name a family without such problems maybr they will be interested.
