Mealie meal shortage hits Kaputa district
THE DISTRICT administration in Kaputa has expressed worry over the shortage of mealie meal that has hit the area for the past one week.
Kaputa district commissioner, Chrispine Kachusha told ZANIS in Mbala in a telephone interview today that the district has had no mealie meal since last week.
Mr. Kachusha disclosed that scrupulous retailers have taken advantage of the situation to exploit the poor people by buying the commodity from Kashikishi in Luapula province and resell at K80, 000 per 25 kg bag.
The district commissioner has appealed to Kasama milling company to start supplying the mealie meal to the area at an affordable price to save the poor people from starvation.
He also appealed to government to intervene in the situation by sending some relief food to Kaputa.
