MMD condemns killing of Chinese manager but blames PF decree of minimum wage

The MMD has strongly condemned the ‘barbaric criminal act of’ killing the Chinese national at Column Mine in Sinazongwe but says the PF regime is to blame.

MMD president Nevers Mumba said in a  press statement that ‘we find the act to be un-Zambian and call for perpetrators to be severely punished.  We wish to send our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and the Chinese government during this very difficult time.’

But the MMD leader added that: ‘many Zambians, including the MMD feel that the PF government has created a very volatile environment between employers and employees.

He said the the ‘decree’ by the Ministry of Labour to raise the minimum wage without adequate consultation with stakeholders will result in continued violence and shall pose a great risk to national security and stability.

Mumba therefore said in order to forestall further violence in the nation, the MMD calls for the immediate suspension of the statutory instrument on the minimum wage until adequate and effective consultations are made.

He Governance is a process and not a science of “immediate effect” decrees, which gives no lead time to employers to prepare themselves for adjusted salaries.

He said such abrupt decrees are injurious to the sustenance of a growing economy and job market.

Regardless of who is in power, the Chinese issue of major concern. We younger generation of Zambia, and Africa as a whole have to come up with solutions on how to deal with them. Their labor practices, their profit vs that of the people of Zambia, how they affect the small business owners, marketeers, etc. We need to be united on this for the sake of our beautiful motherland, Zambia.

    @Joseph George,
First, this is not the US for you to quote in those dollars. Secondly, the mines are not the only employers.
The point is the GRZ should have taken time to make proper consultation and make wider categorization of workers. You personally may be earning thousands of your stupid dollars but you should know that most maids are employed by lowly paid civil servants who received a paltry 15% increase with some allowances removed. I am paying my maid K250,000 and if she is not happy, she goes and I bring my relative to work for food.

  9. Donchi kubambila  August 7, 2012 at 21:12

Joseph george i dont think u are in zambia, people are talking about consulting coz we have a situation were u own a small shop in chawama, profits not gud, then u pay same salary with shoprite,or u own tax, cashing is 100 pin per day, fuel and maitenance,u pay same salary with proprieter of euro buses.if u av attaind minimum skills u will read between lines.a teacher ges about 1500000,he gets 500 for maids,an md gets 20000000,he can afford.its about people against poor.this is not america, economy is weak

Can you imagine the governemnt having to consult for a minimum of pay of $120 per month.Had it been per week, at least one would argue for the governemnt to consult. The elite do not like the grassroots to reach their levels of success. To most people, it is pocket money and Zambia included. Without siding with the PF, the governemnt is elected to govern during it term and thats a fact the opposition are missing. Consultation with the sitting governemnt is a privaledge. In the US today, alot of laws meant to protect the poor have been shot down by Republicans law makers who by the way own alot of businesses. If Zambia is going to pull itself outside the hole of poverty, the elite should change their attitudes. Its unfortunate that some people have learnt and refined the art of critising. The mines in Zambia make alot of money and most of it is externilised outside. The MMD should be last group of people to even comment on this matter. Awarding $120 to someone who takes care of my home while I am away is nothing to scream about. Maids and shop attendants dont belong to any union and if the governemnt does not enact a law to protect them, who will then? Laying off a few individuals because of the fact that the maid salary has been increase is politising the entire affair. Can you imagine that those compalining, would rather epend more money on cell phones and dstv than the maid taking care of them. None of the people speaking the loudest has taken time to talk to maids or shop keepers. I am based in the US but my investments are in African countries. What is being asked in Zambia is within reach for most employers. Would it be true according to Danny as to why they call the poor man’s place “kwa” and “ku”

Verbal directive has been issued by Mr. Chikwanda that all government ministries and ZRA shall keep their surplus funds with Finance Bank. Rajan has promised to give 2% of the deposit amount kept with the bank to Mr. Sata’s family. Last week he withdrew huge amount from Professional Insurance to pay to the minister and PS at Ministry of Energy to continue using finance bank to open letter of credit and insure with Professional Insurance at a premium 50% more than what South African insurance company Hollard Insurance had offered last year.

Politicians zoona “its good for the dog to bite a goat and not a goat to bite a dog ka!” when william Banda was brutalizing people Mumba was cool with that ? When the Chines shot at the workers in Sinazongwe Coal Mine that was okey? when the Police killed innocent people in Mongu that was Ok? when police again killed people in Mazabuka by throwing teargas canisters that was also alright? Let us learn to call a spade a spade and not calling it a big spoon! I am not in any way saying that killing each other is okey, but it igoes to the root cause of such behaviours? if we are to follow the whole issue you will probably find that chitechi was in the wrong? what is bad for the choncholi is bad for a Zambian lessons must be drawn from this matter for both the investor and the worker. taking the Law into your hands is not and has never brought positive results to any form of grouping. its misery upon misery!

THE Indo British banker who advices Sata is only concerned with getting a big profit for his empire and does not care for the ordinary Zambian. This Indo British guy actually ripped us of in the time of Mwanawasa when he overcharged us fore the fuel he said he was funding on behalf of Zambia. There will be more Carlington deals with this Indo British kingpin who kept whatever was surgically removed in India a few weeks ago.

It is hightime you stopped charging the Government with wrongs infact they are right to increase the minimum wage, when those chinese burnt some Zambian were they arested,if not, they are paying for their sins,Infact goverment made it clear that when they come to power they will improve peoples lives,if these chinese fail to abide let them leave our country, who told you that without them this country cannot prosper, after all the reason Zambians cannot use their skill to improve things, it is because they believe chinese can do for them.A Chinese cannot come to africa if it is very poor, we have what they don’t have wealthy, all we need is to use our brains. The most powerful engineer is uk and America is a Zambian Clive Chirwa it is folly to think that you cannot do,then why do you go to school.A powerful journalist lecture in south africa fackson Banda is a Zambian.what makes you believe that you cannot do wake up Zambia, Let the basterd go. they have done to much evil to our economie poor chinese product. Most mine scientist come from zambia and End up in those european or south african mines. we have what it takes to run these mines and other business

  26. katongonsambe  August 7, 2012 at 15:20

Hon Shamendz must swallos his pride and admit that while the idea of raiding the minimum wage is supported by every well mezning Zambizn, the ‘with immediate effect’ style here has backfired.

Employers budget for their operayions about 6 months before the commencement of their financial year andcosg assumptionsare all factorer in to arrive at a projected financial performance. for most companies their budgets were allcompleted for 2012 in 2011. what the consultations with the Employers Associstion would have done was to first agree on the level on increase and then agree on
Date of effecting the new wages, in an organized manner. They could hsve even agreed thst if they will be effective on january 1 2013, then thry would be back dated to the date of agreement.

This isvery simple. what is likely to happen now is the closure of more and more companies because of the tense atmosphere. then where the PF governmdnt be left with their promise of 5 million jobs in 90 days, which has now been adjusted several times.

PF must take responsibility for the emerging national instability starting with the President’s reckless campaign promises.

Its not too late, as Dr Mumba has advised many times, let the president not be kneeling in front of crowds anyhow.

Let him kneel on ZNBC and ask the whole Zambian populaion to forgive him for having deliberately misled the Zambian people for the sake of getting into power when he knew that he had no developmental agenda for anything.

Then let him formally and humblyask MMD to assist PF to put this country back on the right path which MMD left.

This is in reply to blue planet……. even if China is reaping billions from Zambia can they buy a life. What about all the AID China gives Zambia? without the Chinese opening that mine there would have not had jobs. What has become of Zambians, we were never blood thirsty.

CHIWAMILA GALU KULUMA MBUZI, THERE GOES THE SAYING. NO ONE DERIVES PLEASURE FROM SOMEONE’S DEATH IT BE CHINESE OR ZAMBIAN. IT IS AT THE SAME ESTABLISHMENT WHERE ONLY A FEW MONTHS AGO SOME ZAMBIAN MINERS DIED, AND THIS TIME AROUND IT WAS DIRECT SHOOTING. WHAT DID WE SEE? THE KILLERS ARE BACK AT WORK, IT IS THESE SAME PEOPLE WHO ARE COUSING HAVOC TO THE ZAMBIANS THERE. THE GOVERNMENT OF ZAMBIA IS CRYING THE LONDEST, BECAUSE ALL THEY ARE INTERESTED IN IS MONEY, BUT MONEY FOR WHOM? IS IT NOT FOR THE VERY ZAMBIANS THAT THOSE CHINESE SHOT TO DEATH? TODAY CHINESE IS DEAD AND NOT OUT OF SOMEONE’S HANDS, BUT DUE TO CARELESSNESS OF THE PF GOVERNMENT AND INDEED THE MINE OWNERS NOT HONOURING WHAT WAS AGREED UPON BETWEEN THEM AND THE GOVERNMENT, A CHINESE IS GONE. NO ONE TOUCHED THAT CHINESE MAN, BUT IT WAS THE VERY MACHINE WHICH THEY DO NOT MAINTAIN PROPERLY THAT KILLED HIM. IN LAW, THIS CAN NEVER BE A MURDER CASE UNDER WHATSOVER CIRCUMSTANCE. WHEN PEOPLE ARWE RIOTING, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE AND THAT WAS ONE OF THE POSSIBILITIES. IF YOU RELY ON cnp KIND OF ARRANGEMENT, THIS IS WHAT YOU EXPECT. I WANT TO SEE THOSE ZAMBIANS RELEASED FROM WHEREEVER THEY ARE HELD RIGHT AWAY LEST MORE OF US GO BEHIND BARS. IF YOU DID NOT KNOW, CHINESE ARE DESTROYERS. PF HAD A VERY GOOD POLICY WHEN IT WAS IN OPPOSITION, BUT RIGHT NOW, OH DEAR, IT IS IN A MESS.

On this one mumba want to win favour/sympathy from the chinese for finance but these people’miners’dont fall on that category of minimum wage,if so you mean they used to get less than a million.Yes the pf might be to blame for minimum wage but there was a problem, was it that the workers were getting less than a million or what because a miner cant get less than that a month??.These chinese guys are very arogant and enjoy fighting that they are able to beat a group.Investigate first before you conclude. Why was the supervisor involved rather than the human resource personnel?obviously he wanted a show down.chinese believe in fighting so for one to be a supervisor has to be karataker, this shouldnt be mistaken for supporting the manslaughter.
