Mulungushi University vice-chancellor accused of malpractices

Hellicy C N’gambi

Hellicy C N’gambi

Dear ZWD, please withhold my identity.

I am a student at Mulungushi University or should I say a student at the former Mulungushi university now the N’gambi university.

I write with great disappointment, sympathy and anger because of the ill treatment and total disregard of my human dignity and student rights, and deprivation of what is rightfully mine as a Zambian child. Sympathy for my fellow students who have had to experience the leadership of our current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hellicy C N’gambi who has decided to treat the university more less like her kitchen.

The nation must be made aware of what is currently prevailing at this university. Numerous challenges are been faced by the student populous and various efforts have been made by our union leaders in resolving these issues but all efforts have till now proved futile.

The issues that have been faced at the university are;

  1.    Ms N’gambi has personalized the university. It has been discovered that she has introduced first year course that is based on her book (RARE Leadership). The only way of accessing literature regarding this course is by buying her book. This means lecturers are sometimes been forced to suspend their lectures in order for her to market C.V. ( the so called RARE experience).
  2. She is running the university by intimidation as she now makes all the decisions and merely imposes them on all stakeholders. This has resulted in some key lecturers leaving the university in search of better conditions of service.
  3. Students are never well informed regarding issues that directly affect them. For example, the abrupt increase in Boarding and Lodging fees. This has bought about a situation where the lowest paying students at the university are paying k10200 for the 14week semester. This increment has led to drop out of students at the institution. recently, those that managed to pay atleast 50% (which is still very expensive as it is over k6000) have been told to finish  before 31st October 2013 or will not be allowed to attend class.(what university does this?) This has been communicated through the university registrar only 3 weeks prior to the deadline.
  4. Student union representatives are threatened whenever concerns are raised and practically tells them “I am not here for your money as I could be in the united states or the united kingdom so don’t push me as I am not here because of you but because of my qualifications.”
  5. She singlehandedly through her “authority” increased the pass mark from 40% to 50% without consultation and disregarding the already below par performance of students (you can refer to the graduation brochure as there are very few students that graduate with either distinctions or merits.
  6. She is currently trying to push a motion that the university be renamed to Rock of Authority University disregarding the history of “Mulungushi” in Zambia.

The university is currently over enrolling and this has resulted in poor food and sanitation at the cafeteria and as a result, students have been reporting diarrheal diseases. There has also been a serious shortage of lecture theatres and furniture as students are now forced to have as many as two lectures taking place in the same university hall at the same time each in their corners.   The students rioted last semester to raise awareness of the matters at this university to the relevant authorities, but this proved futile and has in fact greatly disappointed the students, youths who ushered the PF into office on the promise of putting education and economic  advancement on high priority unlike the now evident self enrichment and corruption.

Zambian Watchdog being impartial and investigative in reporting, I would urge you to visit the university and confirm for yourself as tensions and anxieties are high among students and stuff and might destabilize this institution of higher learning.

  2. Prudence  October 12, 2013 at 09:37

Prof N’gambi is objective. The person bringing confusion at Mulungushi University is the Deputy Registrar Mr Siachiti. He is trying to pull down the current top leadership.

  3. Kalok  October 12, 2013 at 07:09

So this student feels justified to leave an institution of learning with 60% ignorance? I think there is no contest to this letter – it is downright drivel…

  4. Umkhonto We Sizwe  October 11, 2013 at 21:01

presidential passing mark must be 50+1% also.

  5. Mother  October 11, 2013 at 20:01

Guys be hard working when we your parents take you to school do not go fight wars that are not beneficial. Those who are focused will not be part of the negative things happening in institutions of learning.

Your the future start behaving as such.

  6. Jerado  October 11, 2013 at 14:30

Iwe atase, I graduated at CBU and the pass mark was 50% through out. Lazy student, you should study at a college and not a University. The V.C is just trying to market your degrees so that when you go in the industry, no one should doubt the paper. Look at how well CBU degrees stand out in the industry! Ukose iwe

    • he-goat  October 11, 2013 at 23:10

      uli chisushi ai?

      • Jerado  October 12, 2013 at 04:01

@He-goat, you are so dull that you cant even express yourself properly. For your insult, i can only say that God shall judge you. Get yourself an education and behave!

Ladies and gentlemen, are there any beautiful Bemba women in Zambia or one has to go to Katanga where they came from to find macolocolo mbonyi ya siloko?? Just look at this Ng’ambi cow above and compare it to Nkandu Luo, god must have been in a bad mood when he was creating these Katangese creatures of the Ituri!

Professor Ngambi is a renowned professor having been the first black woman to run the UNiversity of South Africa (UNISA) Business School. In her quest to improve education in Zambia (hence increasing pass mark from 40% to 50%) she left a prestigious good paying job in SA. Tamwakwata fisuma Mwe Bantu…..when people stay in the diaspora you say they are developing other countries, when they come back you complain!
    Viva Prof Ngambi Viva!

bring her 2 unza we sort her out.

  10. Muntu Na Muntu  October 11, 2013 at 09:01

It is immature to insinuate the change of the University name by the writer from Mulungulushi to Ng’ambi university. It is difficult to appreciate this student who is also be personal. My dear student just work hard and be in harmony with your lecturers.

  11. Prophet Malik  October 11, 2013 at 08:51

This woman to me sounds like a goal getter except for the food and sanitation part.

african education is designed for individuals’ bellies maidening. now we should change that. the so called qualified simply take out more than they put in, leaving a poorer state of affiars all round.

  14. CHIPATA  October 11, 2013 at 05:10

she is jst overzealous…one person troubling thousands of poor students! Push her out of that office…use mapatiza formula

  15. Elvis  October 11, 2013 at 05:00

There is nothing wrong in rising passing mark

  16. check 1 2 3  October 11, 2013 at 03:28

I feel for my beloved country as there is no structure that works. The raising of the pass mark is no issue, but i believe there should be a system to implement such changes and such change are done by a university body not individual. Same goes with the introductory of the course after her book. You see for once i thought Zambia was developing in the right direction but alus we are actually derailed. We have very nice and well written policies which we do not follow or even try to implement. we need to change the way we run things. its so sad that we have embraced mediocrity in all our dealings and sectors of life. Even our educated brothers and sisters are preying on our lack of organization. Its a shame that we can have lots of people get enrolled in our universities and only a handful graduate. These are students whom the government gives bursary and pay them allowances but all that goes to waste no one gives a shit about it. I look forward to a time when we can start doing the right things for selfless benefits and make our country a better place. all by the way the professor might be educated which is true but great men and women have humility. No wonder Africa can only have one Mandela great man of wisdom. God we need you.

  17. Ngalande Lukuku  October 10, 2013 at 23:16

CBU pass mark is 50. Pro. Ngambi is doing a good job. There is nothing wrong in promoting her book. I take it that the student who wrote this article is just lazy.

    • Jennipher Musa  October 11, 2013 at 02:54

I agree with you..We need quality work to be done by graduates once they have completed their undergraduate programs. A 40% does no one any good

  18. worried student  October 10, 2013 at 22:21

The situation is a serious concern! Mulungushi University has two campuses the main campus and town campus and it seems town campus has been totally neglected by the V.C! There has been no single change to the infrastructure at Town campus, holding less than 400 student we wonder why there is no plan in place to shift the centre for ICT to the Main Campus! Sometimes students at the cicte are left out of university programs due to the transport issues! The internet is pathetic at town campus, the toilets and bathrooms too! The school and students at town campus should be equally shifted to main campus! Mulungushi will always be Mulungushi! Prof Ng’ambi you have a lot of work to do and please do your work NO one forced you to take the job!

  19. Jm  October 10, 2013 at 21:29

A University is very expensive to run especially in 3rd world country like Zambia where politicians dont regard it as powerful tool to end poverty, hence sanate will continue to raise fees. On passing mark you have to work hard because even UNZA is in the process of doing the same, maybe the promotion of her book is the one which is unacceptable.

  20. Satan  October 10, 2013 at 21:21

Ugly bitch! I have even lost my appetite! Bye Bye Dinner!

  21. ANZERU A KU MAWA  October 10, 2013 at 20:03

I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THIS YOUNG GIRL I BELIEVE VC IS DOING HER BEST BUT SHE IS HUMAN AND MIGHT SHE HAVE SOME SHORTCOMINGS
THE NAME SHOULD BE – MULUNGUSHI ROCK OF AUTHORITY UNIVERSITY ……. THUS HISTORY IF YOU DONT KNOW YOUNG GIRL……. THE COURSE CALLED RERA IS THE GOOD COURSE WHICH I BELIEVE SHOULD BE VERY NECESSARY FOR EVERY STUDENT WHO WISHES TO PREFORM IN THE INDUSTRY AFTER GRADUATION
FOOD – THE SCHOOL IS OFFERING THE BEST MEAL WORTH THE K12….. IF THE AUTHOR HAS A PROBLEM OF STOMACH IT IT HER SELF ONLY AND NOT FOOD
50% PASS MARK ALL STAKEHOLDERS WERE INVOLVED AND SHE WANT TO BRING HARD WORK AT SCHOOL……. THESE GIRLS SPEND MOST OF THEIR TIME PLAYING LOUD MUSIC IN THEIR ROOMS AND WATCH FILMS INSTEAD STUDYING THE AUTHOR DOESN’T MEAN WELL EVEN TO HER SELF….. SHE IS A DISGRUNTLED GIRL WHO NEED MORE COUNSELING
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES TRULY WE HAVE BUT THEY ALSO BEHAVING LIKE KAPONYAS….. THEY NEED RARE LEADERSHIP COURSE SO THAT THEY UNDERSTAND ACCOUNTABILITY TO THE INSTITUTION AND TO THEMSELVES….. THEY DON’T HAVE NEGOTIATING SKILLS……………….. MAY OUR GOOD LORD GIVE THE VC AND TEAM GOOD HEALTH AND WISDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YOURS FOURTH YEAR STUDENT

  22. Al Shabaab  October 10, 2013 at 19:51

    Very interesting

  23. siwale mfula  October 10, 2013 at 19:46

Well, I think prof. Ngambi is doing well in trying to bring professionalism at the university. raising passing mark has a bearing on the student performance. Hope students will work harder. Keep it up prof. Ngambi

  24. People  October 10, 2013 at 19:28

This culture of perpetual handout should come to end in Zambia. Zambia is not some rich country than can continue to offer free education. particularly on the college level. I strongly applaud what Hellicy is doing. Until the government is able to sustain a budget surplus, we all have a moral responsibility to pay for our personal tuition bills. What we need in Zambia is the introduction of student loan policy or law, and if such a law was adopted and implemented effectively, government can than concentrate on modernizing our deplorable education infrastructure and acquiring high level skilled teachers.

  28. Fambei  October 10, 2013 at 13:06

ABOUT THE INTRODUCTION OF THE COURSE,IT’S TRUE AM ALSO DOING IT UNDER DISTANCE AND THE PASS MARK HAS BEEN RAISED.

  29. Sata Namalyanga  October 10, 2013 at 12:31

Rock of Authority University sounds ridiculous. Is there no governing body, e.g. a Senate or Council, to temper her arrogance? She sounds like another Clive Chirwa – self-obsessed and arrogant – and headed for disaster.

    • Preacherman  October 10, 2013 at 18:23

The lady is doing very fine. Kindly submit to authorities. The university is not a charitable organisation.

    • willy jinx  October 10, 2013 at 20:25

Gabon disaster heros stadium all over again.

  30. Sitwala sepiso  October 10, 2013 at 12:08

Just kill her coz liberty still stands.

    • Pastor  October 10, 2013 at 12:29

Killing is no solution but appointing authority should talk to her

  31. koswe  October 10, 2013 at 11:53

2016 Nawakwi FDD Nakoko pabana talala. You Zambians wake up! the kitchen, raising up children, take care of orphans, drunkards, family e.t.c that’s what we need. Our mothers know us very very well. Bravo to the Prof, she is performing extremely well. Just pay your fees please!
Nawakwi for 2016 presidency election. I have her vote do you? Ladies & women support yourselves us men will continue exploiting you.

  32. wawa  October 10, 2013 at 11:09

Hmm, from the complaints she seems to be doing well. Raising pass %, ensuring students finish off payments at a given deadline. World over this is a norm, maybe promoting her book is abuse. Someone could check this. The article is a bit confusing towards the end i.e. students are earlier said to be leaving and later we are told she has over enroll and there are now shortages. She also seems to be in charge of everything? We are told she behaved professionally when she was at UNISA. What has changed bana Ng’ambi?

  33. BINOCULARS  October 10, 2013 at 10:49

    Waaaaa!
Most a time brains and looks have never been twins…..

  35. Paya Fyonse (PF)  October 10, 2013 at 10:31

Does she belong to the family forest? Dont worry, 2016 is near and competent leaders will be employed on merit to run those institutions from whichever tribe. Just vote UPND come 2016.
