Now Zambian women question Sata’s love for Public Order Act

The women movement in Zambia is demanding for an explanation from President Michael Sata on why he now thinks the Public Order Act, a draconian piece of legislation, is a good law.

The Non-Governmental Organization Coordinating Council (NGOCC) says it is shocking to learn that President Sata was now praising the same law he condemned during his time in opposition.

NGOCC board chairperson Beatrice Grillo says it is disappointing that Sata, now Head of State, sees the Public Order Act as a good piece of legislation.

Grillo says President Sata should share the good things he has come to appreciate about the Public Order Act so that the people of Zambia can appreciate it with him.

Speaking to QFM News, Grillo says it is not satisfying for the President to simply say he has found the Public Order Act useful but must give more information on how it has become useful.

The NGOCC board chairperson says the responsibility now lies with the President to settle the scores about the public order act.

President Sata is using the Public Order Act to instruct the Zambia Police to stop meetings by the opposition in what is widely being condemned as an infringement on fundamental rights of assembly, association and free speech.
