Petrol shortage hits Kabwe, as mealie meal prices go up

Empty meallie meal shelves at National Milling outlet

 By Wilson Pondamali in Kabwe

Kabwe has been hit by a shortage of fuel with only two out of 8 filling stations with the commodity and motorists have expressed frustrations putting the blame on the Michael Sata led PF government saying the government has failed to thoroughly address the fuel demand in the country.
Some residents have also appealed to President Michale Sata to make the oil procurement tenders as transparent as possible as opposed to the current status, where a number of senior party and government officials are being investigated by the Anti-corruption commission (ACC).
And mealie meal is also in short supply while prices have continued to rise with a 25 kg Breakfast bag fetching between K53,000 and K60,000 in the few outlets where it is found.
Some traders have taken advantage of the shortage to increase the prices. The government has been called upon to stabilise the supply, fearing the continued shortage will push the commodity beyond reach of most Zambians.
A check by the watchdog revealed that out of 8 filing stations, only two (Engen and Petrotech) had petrol, with queues of motorists lining up to buy the commodity, while fuel attendants from other filling stations were just selling diesel, whose stocks were said to be stable.
Engen received 19,000 litres and the attendant spoken to said going by the rate it was selling, it may finish within a day.
The two Puma filing stations have not had the commodity since Thursday but sources disclosed that they were expecting a tanker either Sunday or Monday but could not state the quantities expected. At Total the commodity ran out this morning and it is not established as to when the next stocks would be delivered.
Oil procurement in the country has mostly been a source of scandalous dealings by successive governments, and Zambia is said to be one of the countries in the SADCC region with very high fuel prices. Currently the ACC has been investigating PF Secretary General Wynter Kabimba over the oil procurement tenders and despite numerous calls by residents to have the nominated member of parliament and minister of justice suspended to pave way for smooth investigations, President Michale Sata refused to act on what he called ‘mere speculations’.

Only Engen had some drops of petrol Saturday afternoon

Meanwhile mealie meal prices have shot up following the shortage that the town has experienced.

On Thursday, all the leading supermarkets had no mealie meal but Shoprite received the commodity yesterday and were rationalising the selling to curb unscupulous dealers who buy and later resale at a higher price. A check at key mealie meal selling outlets, Nissi and WHM supermarkets, Filayi general dealers, Simba milling and the National milling outlets revealed that the commodity was in short supply.
Residents fear that with the festive season around, prices are likely to go up as dealers take advantage of the increased demand and have appealed to government to engage millers to stabilise the supply of the staple food. “the government doesn’t seem to care about us. If this shortage continues the prices will get higher, with the festive season around,” complained a middle aged lady who was found waiting in vain for the commodity at National milling on Friday.

WE TOLD YOU TO VOTE FOR A TONGA MAN HH,WHO KNOWS HOW TO FEED PEOPLE. AS TONGAS OUR TRAINING COMES FROM OUR CULTURE OF FOLLOWING ANIMALS IN THE BUSH, CHECKING IF THEIR TUMMIES ARE FULL AND GIVING THEM WATER TO DRINK! THAT IS CARING FOR LIFE! THIS EXPLAINS WHY IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR A TONGA PRESIDENT TO SEE PEOPLE GO HUNGRY AND DOES NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. IF ZAMBIANS NEED A PROGRESSIVE AND CARING PRESIDENT, THEY SHOULD GO FOR A TONGA PRESIDENT, AND THAT IS HH. FREE WORDS OF ADVICE!

Let’s call for early elections,2016 kwa lepaaa!!!!!

  4. Namakando nawa  December 9, 2012 at 12:53

We told your HH that Zambia is not southern province only……the man is greedy and pretends to be the most educated fellow in Zambia, he failed to read people’s mood and you that as education, the so called grade seven was miles ahead of you chaps UPND now you continued dreaming and misleading masses but Zambians are clever they can’t listen to this trush and vote for a tribal party……I wish i was Bemba…

    • concernedcitizen  December 9, 2012 at 14:31

Stop impersonating yourself to been lozi. PF might be the worst Government but Zambians don’t worry your misery will be over in 2016 as PF is a TRANSITIONAL GOVERNMENT. HH is clever he knew that Sata was confused and will be consumed with POWER no wonder he backed out as he didnt want to be associated with this madness we seeing day in day out.
HH used PF to get MMD out of POWER and 2016 it’s HH kicking PF’s Butt whether he goes it alone or goes with the young blood MMD the result is what matters PF out into the rubbish pit where they belong. i pity given lubinda his wasting his grey matter dining with Grade 7 failures.

    • concernedcitizen  December 9, 2012 at 14:40

      MMD 20 yrs >>>> PF 5 yrs > HH/NEW BLOOD MMD>>>>>>>30 yrs.

HH’s withdraw from the PF/UPND PACT is making SENSE now.

1 . He saw that Sata had signed too many deals with criminals.

      2. He saw that he couldn’t reason with Sata ( who can)

      3. He saw the kind of low caliber MP’s in PF that they were empty tins.

      4. He saw that PF’s manifesto was a lie and unachievable.

      5. He saw most importantly that PF was a sinking ship ( max one term)

** so why kill his political future for 5 years.

      HH thumbs up.

  5. Namakando nawa  December 9, 2012 at 10:49

If you think you can use this platform to campaign for HH you are wasting time…my boy. HH has no clue in the running of the country. I advise that you campaign for him as a counselor for Kabulonga first then may after 50 years he may be an alternate man. It’s unfortunate that we have a shortage in Kabwe BUT its not permanent the working PS of Ernegy and government will sort out immediately.

    • concernedcitizen  December 9, 2012 at 11:28

I thought not having a clue in running Government was the only qualification, if Sata qualifies as not having a clue so that means even HH according to your thinking also qualifies. Unless another qualification is stopping school in Grade 7?

    • Zioneke  December 9, 2012 at 12:45

My friend be objective and get to use what is between your shoulders. I have just been driving around from one shop to another here in Luanshya looking for a bag of bunga and all you can say is this trash! i finally got one 25kg bag in some shop going at 70pin and you think we can continue with this clueless party in government. Some of us voted for this PF party and we are regretting. Remember Zambia is bigger than PF and so continue thinking like that and you will be shocked what will happen to the PF government. Where is UNIP and MMD? Do not take people for granted my friend. This guys have Legallised corruption and all you say is HH will never rule! keep on dreaming my friend

Its because of fools like you that will make this country not to develope. What good experience can you get from yuor old president? Is it mealie meal shortage? is it fuel hortage? is it corrupt ministers? is it dictatorship? is it not to honor his promisses within 90 days. People lets wake up HH is the only answer not this trible talk. By the way Im pure northerner but i dont believe in nosense but in quality leadership

  6. concernedcitizen  December 9, 2012 at 10:48

Wynter Kabimba where is the fuel?
Has Trafigura done you a dont kubeba, i guess their better cons than you?

Try doing some back ground check before you award contracts oh yes you do but the only criteria you look for is the company which is willing to give the highest kick back.

what a shame every thing is at a shortage, very soon even prostitutes will follow as a result of steven masumba taking them all to parliament motel.

The book of revelations stipulated on the anti christ, he wil appear like a saviour and every one will fall in his trap only those that are filled with the holy spirit coz they wil b guided. A lot of zambians wer dancing in the street not knowing wat they wer celebrating for.
the first sunday he was in church claiming to lead the nation with the 10 comandments.
that said simple ecomics jst two situations we have @ the moment.
      1. Mark my words a 25kg of mealie wil stop @ k100,000 (reb k100) thats the trend in zambia, so the difference is the same if not worse. Ths government is producing a k100,000 which wil have a power of buyng a bug of ubunga. Meaning the biggest note in zambia is usually the amount of mealie meal. Check history.
      2. More money in yo pocket! Thats just definition of inflation. They are tryng to avoid inflation thats the shortage of comodities.
      Lets open our eyes.

This is a failedgovt. Short sighted people may not see it now but they will soon realise that this pf govt is up to no good. I see this as a punishment from God coz deep down every one heart is aware that Sata is not presidential material. Expect worse things to come and hope the kaponyas have learnt their lessons.
Since pf assumed power, can someone show me any tangiblle achievement apart frm the 100%increament and building his house not forgetting arresting opposition mps found at the market

Sata of all animals, being CNP, should know only too well the dangers of slumbering like this.

Levy had the presidency land on his forehead while slumbering & once he had it, he never slept. If you sleep on duty, “Chimbwi No Plan iwe”, this is what will happen to you, please visit this site, it is Sata himself waking up in the jaws of Kaingo:
