Roy Clarke recounts bad experience at HiFi corp



Be very wary before buying anything from the new HiFi Corp shop at Manda Hill, where I was recently the victim of some very sharp practice. I bought a Sansui touch screen car radio which was priced at K2.45m.

The salesman said he would sell it at K2.30 million, and also give me an extended two-year warranty. I had to take it back two days later because it didn’t work properly. After three return visits and finally a long discussion with the store manager I discovered that the selling price was supposed to have been K2.00m, although the (printed label) price of the display radio was K2.45!

The price had been inflated in order to (i) give a bogus discount of K150,000, and then (ii) sell me the two-year warranty for K300,000 (the salesman was getting a commission for selling this unnecessary and very high-priced warranty!). In addition, (iii) the radio was not in its original polystyrene wrapping and the box had been previously opened. I am therefore extremely suspicious that this faulty radio had already been returned by a previous customer.

    Roy, I am distraught to receive a complaint of this nature as this is definitely not behavior that one would associate with HiFi Corp.

    After receiving your complaint, I established that you had bought a demonstration Sansui unit for which you received a discount and an extended warranty. On installation of the car radio, it was discovered to be faulty and this you reported to the HiFi Corp Store. It was then mutually agreed that you would buy an upgraded the unit being a Pioneer Car Radio and pay in the difference, enjoying the same benefits as before, i.e. a discount with an extended warranty, even though this unit was a new unit and not a demonstration unit. On approaching the Branch Manager with your concerns he agreed to give you the same benefits as before i.e. a discount with an extended warranty.

    We are a large listed company and pride ourselves on excellent customer service and good corporate governance. We have an excellent service record in Zambia and would aim to please every customer that we deal with. We value the support of the community and will continue to bring great prices, quality and service to the Zambian consumer.

    I believe this may be a case of misunderstood communication, but should you not be happy in any way with the product that you bought, we will gladly credit you accordingly.

    I notice that, in a hundred responses, there is no response from the manager of Hifi Corp store in Lusaka attempting to defend himself from my accusations. Now what does that tell you?

      The shop management is guilty of conspiracy to from the unsuspecting and ignorant public. Sue them to court they get exposed more!

    As a zambian I believe this is just a case of another white man not getting his way, he thinks a shop like HIFI Corparation should do what he wants just because it is run by a white man!! As a black man who has shopped at HiFi I am impressed by there service and sales!! Agents who walk and talk with you till you leave,, come on my fellow zambians, HiFi has changed the market for us that game is finaly lefting its standerds, people talk about discounts been given to us?? Its because we ask for them,, now by showing how disrespect, do u think they will give us discounts?, yes there warrenty is a waste of money and I will never buy it but that’s my right not to!! Its yours too!! Don’t buy it and only take the product! I welcome HiFi to zambia as all of you should!! Or Game will have its way again and we will all feel it, I save you save so let’s don’t destore a good company for 1 person who got fired and dose not care about you or me but himself!

    shame on you kalaki i have bought appliances from HIFI and they are working very well, we can not judge HIFI based on you unfortunate experience and for the fact that out of hundreds of people who have shopped at HIFI only a handful of you chaps have had a negative experience do you understand?KALAKI WAWA VIVA HIFI.

    This is the Indian way, I saw discounts of of up to 70%! The price is overly inflated in order to show a “discount”.
