ZCID alarmed by continued harassment of opposition

The Zambia Centre for Interparty Dialogue (ZCID) says it is alarmed by the continued harassment of political leaders by police especially that they are particularly targeting the opposition.

ZCID director Horrance Chilando saysthe arrest of MMD President Nevers Mumba and others for meeting Chief Nkana is particularly saddening.

He the people of Zambia have repeatedly complained about the misuse of the law to settle political scores and that it is needless to point out that Zambia is a democracy in which fundamental rights of its citizens are supposed to be protected.

He said ZCID is concerned that recent trends do not show a positive move towards democratic consolidation and if not checked this trend may negate all the achievements we have so far scored as a nation.

‘We wish, therefore, to condemn the arrest and continued harassment of our political leaders under the pretext of maintaining law and order.

‘We wish to urge the police command to act professionally and exercise correct moral judgement when coming up with such decisions.

Such acts should not have a place in a democratic nation.  While we appreciate the crucial role that our security wings play in ensuring peace and security, however, this should be done within the ambits of democratic practice and respect for people’s rights,’ he said.

Chilando called upon all defenders of democracy to stand against this deliberate assault on our democracy.

Constructive critism is a good element of verifying the implementation of checks & balances in an organisation, political party & good governance. The same theory works for an opposition party in any country:-it provides friction on questionable decisions made by present day government as well as direction for the latter. Therefore the bulling of the opposition parties by PF government is an absurb move & step in the wrong direction. It was UPND in Chawama Lusaka at first now its MMD in Lufwanyama, both reasons being’, no police permits. My fellow Zambians are all aware of these two giant opposition parties,we all know that these parties understands the political system so well.My request is to the Zambia Center for Interparty Dialogue to intervene in this serious pressing matter, let them dialogue with the PF govt & come to terms about the importance of the opposition in a democratic state.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT THIS YOURSELF AS A CONCERNED ZAMBIAN? WHAT WE NEED IS TO SHARE STRATEGIES ON HOW TO SUMMOUNT SOME OF THESE CHALLENGES OTHERWISE WE ARE ALL GUILTY OF BEING LAMENTORS.

who can like the leadership style of Mumba and HH? what are we benefiting as a country from ths Two. Opposition is not about insults but offering alternatives and advising the government.

Who says? The opposition is not about advising govt. Being in the Opposition is about seeking to take over govt so that you implement your own political programs. Whoever wins elections is supposed to have their own programs, instead of looking to the Opposition to give them ideas of how to run a country. If running a country is too tough for PF, they should step aside and let somebody else do the job.

Leadership can either come from people or from God.When it is from people, it is dictatorship else it is democracy. When king Herod head of the coming of Jesus, he started panicking. Let us wait and see if PF is from people or from God.

Clearly, one more person has woken up to the fact that our fledgling democracy is now under siege from the very people who were supposed to protect it!

This time we need more than just condemning but providing a lasting solution to this nonsense!

    • KING ATASe!  December 12, 2012 at 12:33

What do you mean? One has to condemn dictatorial behaviour. The ones who should bring lasting solutions are bringing chaos and dictatorship. Is this what you voted for? Let us get rid of this nonsense once and for all in 2016.
