Sata fears UNIP food riots, admits Kwacha is now worthless under PF

President Michael Sata has expressed great concern over the transport system in the country.

Mr. Sata said the current transport system in the country was not as reliable as it was Zambia just got independence.

He said there was therefore need to improve the transport system in order to ease movements of goods and people.

He also wondered why Zambia has no national airline when it has qualified people in strategic positions to help establish and run such modes of transport.

The President said this at State House today when he swore in Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Permanent Secretary Julius Shawa.

Meanwhile, President Sata has directed relevant authorities to ensure that the rebasing of Kwacha is properly done by the end of this year.

He noted that although the Kwacha has already been rebased, there was need to have the process completed successfully.

Mr. Sata regretted that the Kwacha has continued to have less value as compared to other foreign currencies.

On the other hand, the President has urged ministers to serve and protect the people who voted for them.

Mr. Sata said this in reference to the increase in mealie meal prices that the nation has experienced in the recent past.

He said he does not want to see the country experience any food riots as was the case in one of the previous regimes.

The President has since held a closed door meeting with the millers at State House immediately to find a way forward on the issue of mealie meal prices.

  13. today the president had a meeting with millers to the way forward on the high cost of out staple food.one thing i fail to understand this pf govt is that they simply dont understand the basic rule and principles of economics. yes the millers could be buying a bag of maize at 60 kwacha rebased, but what about other cost such as the mantaince of the machinary, trasportation, wages consdering that the same pf has increased the minimum wage, rentals for those who do not own the plants, water bills ,electricity bills etc the retailer also faces the same costs, so these tend to push the price upward, all what the pf govt needs to do is to bring the cost of doing business down. please if you have no idea on how to run govt step down and let others try. price control is not the best idea

  34. First of all CNP get your priorities right, I think investing in a national airline which will be monopolised by yo wife and cadres is not priority. I would have appreciated the need to re-establish the railway line as most urgent because it will translate into reduced business cost(in transportation trickling down to reduced prices of goods) and the job catchment of railway will be much more than the airline. The factor that contributes to high prices is transport whether it be maize or any other commodity, this is where you should be thinking.
Secondly give confidence to the political atmosphere by settling down and stop this nonsense of appointing and reappointing, already one year on your mandate you have wasted on this unprofitable venture and all you have succeeded is being a laughing stock.
