Gate charges prevent fans from Zambian game, fans condemn new kit

Exorbitant gate charges by the Football Association of Zambia prevented many fans from seeing off and cheer the Chipolopolo boys final preparatory match with Norway on Saturday.

The Levy Mwanawasa stadium  in Ndola was virtually empty during the final warm-up international match before Zambia commences the defence of the title they won last February

The gate charges for the friendly international match against Norway were as follows:

VIP – KR500.00 (K500,000.00)

East Lower Deck – KR200.00 (K200,000.00)

West Lower Deck – KR250.00 (K250,000.00)

North Lower Deck – KR50.00 (K50,000.00)

South Lower Deck – KR50.00 (K50,000.00)

East Upper Deck – KR150.00 (K150,000.00)

West Upper Deck – KR200.00 (K200,000.00)

North Upper Deck – KR50.00 (K50,000.00)

South Upper Deck – KR50.00 (K50,000.00)

Meanwhile, many soccer fans are not happy with the design of the newly unveiled Zambia national team official shirt to be used in South Africa.

A cross-section of the fans spoken to said the new kit was a mockery to Zambian football and wished FAZ had maintained the old shirt or merely made a few modifications.

Some fans said the jersey was worse than prisoners uniforms instating that some imitations in the streets were even better for the boys.

But FAZ spokesperson Erick Mwanza told that the new shirts were tailored to be sold at a lower and affordable price so that thousands of fans can afford the official gear.

The Football Association of Zambia says the new official shirt of FAZ should not be sold for more than ZMW150.

Mwanza also warned all traders who have been dealing in “pirated” FAZ shirts, that with the cooperation of the state police and its intellectual property unit as well as local authorities, FAZ is commencing the confiscation of all products that are football related but not official.

On Sunday, Chipolopolo fly back to South Africa where they have been preparing since 26 December.

Chipolopolo commence the defence of her title with a January 21 fixture against Ethiopia before taking on Nigeria on the 25th and complete Group C business against Burkina Faso on the 29th.

  1. Just as much as we would like to have a jersey that is affordable to the fans, the current jersey does not look presentable at all. How you look many a time has an impact on how you behave/perform. I just hope that our boys will not suffer from an inferiority complex and perform lousyly because that is just what that jersey depicts. God have mercy on us.

  2. the new jersey is simply unacceptable. FAZ should have involved the pubblic if that was any need to cahnge the design of the national team jersey because the team belongs to the public. there are alot of designers locally and i am sure a better design could have been achieved inviting local designers to bid for this job.

  12. Somtimes i wonder what comes into people from faz`s minds. In other countries what they do is that they reduce the gate charges drasticaly so as to allow more supporters to cheer the team but what happened is nonsense and the kit, i dont know what foolish and stupid name to give it.

  15. At first glance, I wondered why the Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa stadium was somewhat empty, little did i know it was due to inflated gate charges over a friendly match, with a poorly designed nations colours as our official kit! Brazil national soccer team and Everton FC are the only two teams in the world who are using a ragged design as football pitch suit. Its amazing that the champions have been subjected to rags from riches of our national heritage colours, thereby robbing the champs the deserved status even before the title defense starts in S.A. How can we defend our title in rags to say the least, huh? FAZ dress our champs in the winning colours in Libreville before we relinquish our championship to hungry Ghanaians and Drogba of Ivory Coast who still claim we won the title by fluke.

  16. It’s funny how Eric Mwanza thinks he will stop imitation by issuing warnings in the comfort of his office. Imitations are even sold within the stadium premises and car park.

    Vilifier - January 15, 2013

  17. If the original jersey is lik that what more chinese one?
Shame on FAZ use that one which we used to win afco coz it
    is recognised worldwide

    Clem - January 15, 2013

    • I agree with you, i was even telling my friend over beer that the new jersey will be the easiest ever to be imitated by the Chinese am sure before kick of the jersey will be on the market from china and will look same because the new jersey looks like a pirated one.shame on who ever designed it.

      REBASED ZULU - January 15, 2013

  18. Why do we pretend that FAZ owns the stadoum? Were we not told that it costs K200mil/month to maintain? The problem with paying peanuts is that you cause damage to the infrastructure. Better its half full and it doesnt cost us to repair damage caused by the monkeys attracted by peanuts charged!

Lets learn to pay for value! Speaking of which,FAZ should learn to consult. Before the AfCON they could have engaged the public to submit kit designs like RSA did for its Olympics kit! Price would have included vip ticket to a match or recognition of the designer etc! No creativity pa Zed!

  22. The so called new jersey for Chipolopolo is really pathetic, Eric Mwanza was proudly telling us that the new jersey would be in the same class as Brazil, Chelsea and other champions Lol! what a joke, while there is still time let Nike design something benefiting champions, the old jersey had become synonymous with Zambia, it was a pride of everyone even in foreign countries, twice i had to part away with my green jersey, as people wanted them, these were not Zambians, the problem is not pirated replicas, but marketing strategies, Check all national teams worldwide, the jersey is a symbol of national character and flag, for us green the prominent colour, then other colours come out in the designs. FAZ should conduct a design Chipolopolo jersey competition, u will see how good the jersey will be, sorry the new jersey is a MISS.

    Dodo Extinct - January 14, 2013

  23. FAZ is no different from the rest of the Country a deficit of leadership.Kalusha Bwalya is an accident to be the President of FAZ he was a great football player but not a leader of a business entity like FAZ just like the many Politicians who have been elected into office who have accomplished nothing for their constituencies. The game between Norway and Zambia would have been a huge morale booster to the fans FAZ was suppose to charge a flat rate of K10 the stadium would have full to capacity.Fire Kalusha Bwalya FAZ needs leadership

    jojo - January 14, 2013

  24. I am not happy with new jersery it will make us not reach the FINALS of the AFCON.PLEASE use the OLD jersey PLS PLS PLS. FAZ committe WAKE UP!

  25. Those condemning the new Zambia strip, should watch Everton and I’m sure they will tell the similarility expept for the colours ( blue and white ) for Everton otherwise the design is exactly the same with Chipolopolo.

  29. Chelsea returned 912 tickets allocated to their fans for a game at Asernal because they were deemed very expensive at 62 Pounds which is less than K500 these rebased chaps at FAZ were charging for a friendly.

  34. I have no sympathy for the Copperbelt kaponyas who are complaining. Satana did not say that you would KEEP more money in your pockets. If you get more money in your pockets, he will find ways of taking it away. This is one way. The other is higher mealie meal prices, higher school fees, higher rentals, higher fuel prices. So you got more money in your pockets, huh!!
