Wilson Pondamali

A Zambian journalist was charged Wednesday with possession of restricted information, in a latest crackdown on media workers critical of the government, his lawyer said.

Police searched Wilson Pondamali’s home and found a document linking him to an article published by the country’s only investigative news site, Zambian Watchdog, Accroding to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

According to Pondamaili’s lawyer, Mulilo Kabesha, the document contained information suggesting that President Michael Sata was not fit to govern.

The freelance journalist is in police custody, and more charges could be brought against him.

“I can confirm that he has been charged with the offence of unlawful possession of restricted military pamphlet,” said Kabesha. The offence carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

Last week, two journalists were charged with sedition after they were found with documents linked to articles published on Zambian Watchdog.

The hunt continued despite the publication’s policy of withholding the names of its journalists to protect their identities. Its webpage has been blocked by authorities since Tuesday.

The government of the southern African country has been accused of being intolerant of criticism

  1. I hope the situation is under control.
The whole thing seems to be degenerating.
The clampdown is proving to be quite
severe. I am wondering how long this is
all going to last? The proxies are not
what they should be. As I write this I
am actually lucky to be able to say this.
The Freedom of Information is being dealt
a severe hand by an overbearing State. If
I am not able to return please continue to
Fight for the Justice, Peace, Prosperity,
    Democracy and Prosperity for all.

  16. The PF GROUP must have a lot to hide. They now seem to be afraid of what the ordinary person will uncover about them. There is a luyana (lozi) proverb that says; “Wa yola wa mbinji wese kukangala biunda tikusuma”. Literally translated means “IF YOU SUCCEED SOMEONE WITH SPEARS DON’T REJOICE BECAUSE TOMORROW THEY WILL PIERCE YOU TOO”! PF took over govt from MMD using underhand methods of stealing information and twisting it to mislead mostly the young and gullible who formed the greater quota of voters. Unfortunately for PF even the non discerning can now see through their entire “spin”. The information leakages they exploited while in opposition are now haunting them. Their desperate efforts to shut down ZWD are akin to sealing a reed basket in the hope of water-proofing it! The best remedy for them is to deliver on their promises, period!
