An MMD parliamentarian accused of being an Angolan refugee yesterday appeared in court in Kaoma, police spokesperson Ndandula Siamana confirmed.

Siamana yesterday confirmed the arrest of MMD Mangango member of parliament Robert Taundi Chiseke over allegations that he was a foreigner.

“Yes, Honourable Taundi Chiseke was arrested in Mangango Constituency in Kaoma District in Western Province and he is appearing in court today yesterday,” said Siamana. “Honourable Chiseke was charged for giving false information to the public officer and other immigration related offences.”

During a meeting with the head of the Anglican Church Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, at State House in Lusaka on Tuesday, President Michael Sata said it was unfortunate that some people in Western Province voted for a refugee as a member of parliament.

“We have one case now where one refugee was elected member of parliament in Western Province. It’s most unfortunate. This is not his fault. It was the fault of the former government because it took advantage of refugees; they Rupiah Banda government gave refugees NRCs National Registration Cards and voters cards, in their continuous rigging of the elections,” said President Sata. “This was a clever refugee, says, ‘if I have NRC and I have a voter’s card, then I qualify to be MP’. He was popular and the refugees voted for him and he is MP in Western Province.”

President Sata said this in response to Archbishop Williams’ question on Zambia’s position on refugees’ welfare.

  1. Welcome Zambia! PF won elections by default, so many lies and today, the refugee is a minister, bones of my grandparents are turning in his grave. UPND, prepare court document to restrain Refugee Chiseke when he crosses and stands on PF ticket. The Catholics must be sorry about the support most priests gave to Sata’s Pf. Nkoyas, Luvale and Mbunda Zambians; and Lozis, you must apply the ‘Mitete Formula’, in Lukulu West. The time is now. No more parties but Zambian interests.

  2. Will Parliament go with the people when it comes to enacting the New Constitution? Very unlikely. The people are mere spectators.

In the past the pro-Government (majority MPs on ruling party ticket) Parliament did not go with the people. Remember the amendment of the ACC Act to remove the clause on abuse of office.

As matters stand now, our new constitution is likely to come without 50+1, dual citizenship, bill of rights, proportional representation, banning of crossing the floor anyhow etc because the PF’s position on these is known. Never mind being told that you are in a representative democracy. Did you elect Mr Kabimba? I know you elected Taima and others who won at the expense of the MMD, but did they consult the voters in their respective constituencies on whether they should defect or not? Once you vote them in they become your dictators and since they control your police, they will unleash them on you without hesitation. I rest my case

In case you do not know, what you are experiencing in Zambia does not happen in western democracies. There, elected leaders respect the electorate. It is so good there. Just this week, Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr John Key, had to apologise publicly for simply saying the city of Wellington was dying. He was verbally attacked by the dwellers of that city with the opposition coming out strongly. The public broadcaster, NZ1 did not spare him either. Another MP in the ruling National party has been asked to resign by the PM for making some careless remark at a party. That is democracy and civilisation, comrades.

  3. Not surprised that no sooner did he appear in court after his arrest than he resigned from MMD to join PF! This is a vivid and desperate move of self-preservation on his part.

Now, let us observe how the cards will be shuffled……

  10. ROBERT WAS ACCUSED OF BEING A REFUGE BEFORE HE WAS CLEARED BY OUR COURTS OF LAW. ROBERT HAS BEEN CLEARED BY OUR COURTS AND THAT’S THE REASON WHY SATA HAS APPOINTED HIM A D/MINISTER. CHECK THE RECORDS.

  11. The president does not care he will not live long to face the courts of the land I just hope his family tree will survive the investigations, interrogations and court appearances. I think honesty is the best virtue, the position of President of the land is good enough to live happy ever after without being corrupt. Why not emulate some developed countries twapapata.

    • Likewise yes. All Sata`s relatives must be treated as refugees in other parts of zambia since their own SATAN has refused to embrace others.

      Quite reasonable approach/
