Kabwe based Investigative Journalist Wilson Pondamali is still detained and has been slapped with a second charge of stealing a book.

Like in most dictatorships around the world that also wish to benefit from democracy, the police are not charging Pondamali with anything to do with his journalistic work which is the real reason they arrested him. They have found trumped up charges just to punish him for exposing government corruption and incompetence.

Pondamali was abducted by police last Wednesday and was denied police bond to date. His lawyers will try to push for his release through police a bond or court bail.

Police have charged Pondamali with two counts of being in possession of military books and theft. In the first count police claim that he was found possession of military books contrary to the Defence Act Chapter 106 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the charge are that Pondamali on July 17, 2013 did have in his possession one copy of a restricted Zambia Defence Service Intelligence book and one restricted tactics book used for military purposes.

In the second count it is alleged that the accused did steal a book entitled Freedom of the Mind valued at K140 a property of Kabwe Municipal Council (KMC).

But Pondamali is in good spirits. Speaking from Mpima remand prison where he is currently detained, Pondamali said he is surviving.

Meanwhile, the Zambian government says it is happy with the arrest of journalists Pondamali, Thomas Zyambo and Clayson Hamasaka.

Information and Broadcasting ServicesMinister Kennedy Sakeni said investigative wings would clamp down on any person suspected to have broken the law regardless of whether they were journalists or not.

“The question is, are you journalists above the law that you can not be investigated even if the police has reason to suspect you of having committed an offence? If they suspect you, why can’t they investigate or arrest you like anybody else?” he said.

  4. SAATANI. WHAT A USELESS PRESIDENT WHO IS BUSY PERSECUTING THE CITIZENS OF ZAMBIA SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE VOICING OUT THEIR CONCERNS ON GOVERNANCE OF OUR LAND. SATA’S CUP IS ALMOST GETTING FULL. HE HAS DESTROYED HIS OWN LIFE.

  5. FOR HOW LONG WILL MICHAEL SATA AND HIS FAILED PF GOVERNMENT CONTINUE TO SUPPRESS THE ZAMBIAN CITIZENS? FOR HOW LONG WILL SATA AND HIS COHORTS CONTINUE TO FIGHT OUR FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS INCLUSIVE OF EXPRESSION, ASSOCIATION, MOVEMENT, etc? THIS LUNATIC MUST BE STOPPED FROM ABUSING THE ZAMBIAN CITIZENS. WE HAVE TO STOP HIM. IF HE WANTS TO DIE LET HIM DIE ALONE. HE SHOULDN’T PULL THE WHOLE COUNTRY DOWN. WHY IS SATA STILL ALLOWED TO RUN OUR COUNTRY WHEN HE IS A FAILED PRESIDENT? SATA MUST BE STOPPED FROM RUNNING OUR COUNTRY.

  6. Foolish PF arresting Pondamali on trumped up charges. The Police should arrest Wynter for corruption not innocent Journalists.

Wynter is the courier of money to SATA from Trafigura involving Oil deals.

Traffigula will sing what PF is doing the time PF will be kicked out of power.

  7. “investigative wings will arrest anyone whether journalist or not”. PF are forgetting that they are employees that can be questioned by us, their employers, on how they’re performing their responsibilities. If I’m not happy about employees’ execution of duty I will lawfully and legitimately query and seek correction. Who in their right mind, for instance, can be happy about Mrs. Kabwiku’s public assault and undressing by political thugs? It does not give any confidence that the party in govt can allow, without reprimand or punishment, its cadres to beat up defenceless women in the name of democracy. Since Mr. Sakeni is “chief spinner”, can he tell us what kind of democracy ASSAULT is and which decent academic authority describes it as such? These jobs you applied for and got under false pretences are TEMPORARY. They have an expiry date but the COUNTRY DOES NOT EXPIRE! ZAMBIA WILL BE HERE LONG AFTER PF AND THE PEOPLE THAT RUN IT ARE GONE.

  10. The Pf are chasing after their own lies sleeplessly, hence all this circus, pretending to fish for “tiger-fish” in the kariba when knowingly they are wallowing in a mud pool to catch tadpoles!
All these acts of intimidation and suppression of persons are a display of their innermost cowardice and moral bankruptcy of the highest order!
