US embassies in 7 countries warn of possible attacks

Published September 12, 2012

Associated Press

WASHINGTON –  U.S. embassies in at least seven countries in the Middle East, Africa and the Caucuses are warning of possible anti-American protests following the attack on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.

The embassies in Armenia, Burundi, Kuwait, Sudan, Tunisia and Zambia, along with the embassy in Egypt, which was hit by a protest on Tuesday, all issued warnings on Wednesday advising Americans to be particularly vigilant.

The warnings, posted on the embassies’ websites, do not report any specific threat to Americans but note that demonstrations can become violent.

The protest in Cairo and the attack in Benghazi appear to have been responses to an inflammatory anti-Muslim video posted on the Internet

  1. Zambian people + peace = Zambian future. let us not trade our developmental potential wrapped in the unique peaceful culture with selfish and proud attitudes. We shouldn’t be like these Muslims who are languishing in years of war and poverty in the name of patriotism. “A life is worth more than the pride of the nation”. Learn 4rm Mandela & not Mugabe. Check the Obama First speech to the Arab world; the man called for reconciliation without favoring either sides (America or the Muslims)- but what was their response within just few minutes? “Mwikala patalala mwine apatalalika.” (He who wants peace must put an effort to it).

  3. Our president has this tendency of starting fights he is incapable of finishing. As minister he started a physical fight with another minister, the late Dawson Lupunga who gave him a bloody good hiding and not long after, using his caustic toungue provoked some Ngonis at a ceremony in Eastern Province who beat the hell out of him. He is now provoking the Americans and other diplomatic missions without any idea how the fight will go. This behaviour by a head of state is frankly getting us at tether’s end. You cannot have this foolishness day in and day out from a head of state. How can we, goodness me be classified with the most risky of the world’s countries? Just what goes on in the mind of this man?

  4. Deeply concerned you are an idiot! There are a lot of muslims in Zambia and they’ve been here for generations. I’m one of them. I’m a Zambian citizen born here, I’m a law abiding citizen. I have probably contributed more to this country than you will ever! So what’s wrong with the government giving recognition to the contributing section of the Muslim community? Is it wrong to be a Muslim? Your thinking is very shallow and shows a lack of understanding and grasp of issues. Think outside if the box!

  6. Where is the Minister of Defense and Minister of Home Affairs to issue a statement that will assure Zambians, diplomats and International community that they have everything under control, and everyone is safe in Zambia this is where they should drive their energies and not on the opposition or Barotseland which must be resolved by conflict resolution skills.

  7. How i wish iwas Zimbabwean , at least they are proud of their country … you tongas are busy selling our land by your useless inferiority complex.
this has absolutely nothing to do with what The PRESIDENT said but everything to do with the US protecting their personnel … When the US embassy was attacked a few yesr a ago in Nairobi was it because of anything to do with Kenya questioning the us meddling? Besides the president did not menetion the names of diplomats meddling in our internal politics … Imwe bapushi be PATRIOTIC for ounce do not sell our country over a few cents

  8. I think Americans are being alert for a good reason. These guys dont just speak from without. They have high level information.

Just recently someone SENIOR official in Government on the media during the month of RAMADAN was quoted saying “MUSLIMS ARE A MOST IMPORTANT MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY” Now to the Americans JUST that statement, it sounds like – Their best friend is a best friend of their worst enemy.

How can that work honestly ? you either will slowly turn into a threat yourself or eventually enemy if not worst enemy too.

What do you expect ? You automatically become a threat ! dont blame them for being Alert !

  9. I totally concurr with those whoa re of the view that Zambia’s placement on dat list is probably a response to sata’s threat to have all diplomats who meddle in the internal affairs of the state deported. Word of caution to Sata: this is not the time to get on America’s nerves

  18. Good diplomatic relationship comes from a well motived economy, social activities, public interactions, tact and diplomacy in handling national matters, not having whim ideas which may discourage investor confidence, positive political connotations from both the ruling and opposition parties, and above all democratic prevalence. Should one of these sector is found compromised, then just know that the country will lose bearing and erode the security it was given. Consequently, the donor community will withdraw their assistance and affect the country’s economy, health sector; security classification will dwindle for a higher considered grade to 1st grade of insecurity, and to crown it all suffering like the neighbouring Zimbabwe. I know most people will think of china that it will provide aid to Zambia, that’s fake. The EU has the capacity to upgrade a third world country other than china. Further, Zambia has been classified as such as seen from the recent miner’s protest which resulted into a death of one Chinese, and this classification is duly arising from such incidents. Dear bloggers I therefore, do not see why some people who cannot properly reason just post their thoughts without carrying out a critical analysis. The solution to this insecurity situation is, let the PF government revisit its dealings among others the detaining of baroste Activists, allow a cordial and well levelled political ground free of any intimidations whatsoever, honour the campaign promises, respect human rights, codify diplomatic relationship on all diplomats accredited to Zambia and stop issuing threatening remarks against diplomats, respect the rule of law and provide a good and clear governance policies. Though having put all this mouth full to provide workable solutions to PF government, it’s a share worst of efforts, gauging the type and calibre of leaders we have. Shame on you, change for the better because this insecurity will affect the Zambian in the diaspora believe me already most citizens have been affected. Further this will affect the forth coming tourism exhibition co-hosted with Zimbabwe. Let us look at the long term impact and see the future don’t be myopic please PF Gov.

  33. We must also be aware that the US started constracting “the big embassy”almost at the same time they wanted to put up a military base here in zambia. It’s only my Mwanawasa who saved us from the nonsense. There surely be something in this big embassy that must be a target of US’s enemies. It’s not about the country zambia, but america itself and they must have gotten this from their intelligence sources.Even before the US embassy in Kenya was attacked, the americans had an ideal that some enemies were planning such.Even the 9/11 attack, americans had an ideal that their enemies were planning for an attack. This is my theory @Zambia Needs Prayers
