‘UTH Doctors demanding K6m bribe to operate my friend’

Dear Editor

Allow me to inform the world through you about the corruption which has spread like cancer at our biggest health Institution in Zambia(UTH).

A friend of mine is admitted at UTH awaiting operation on his broken leg, he has been on a waiting list for more than two months now. He was requested by a named Doctor to pay a K6,000,000 if he wanted to be operated on fast. The Doctor even offered his personal account number for the patient to deposit the money.

There are so many cases where patients have bribed Doctors to be operated on. Eg Last week a Zimbabwean national was operated on the same day he was admitted after bribing a Doctor with a K6,000,000. The other patient was told to pay a K30,000,000 but he couldn’t manage and is still on a waiting list.

May the government move in and bring sanity to UTH before lives are lost due to corruption.

  3. Being poor or rich, what we are toking abt is LIFE,the govmnt must with imidiet efect change de system of alowing doctors and sugeons to conduct those private operation for it is da source of those delayment on da waiting lists. The changes dat were made institution were just targeted at individuals instead of change of administration to avoid maladroition of these institution. The change we wanted was change in admin not faces.

  5. Let the President be seen to be allergic to corruption even when it is not linked to politics. PF’s ACC seems to be so eager to pursue those deemed to be PF’s enemies due to their different views but are ignoring such serious corruption scandals that affect the poor. ACC please, follow up this matter.

    • The Doctor is appointed in the name of the President. So any corrupt activities by doctors or civil servants, definitely put the name of the President in disrepute.

  14. UTH is now the PF death support unit. We are in trouble. Let’s stop attacking the Doctors what they allegedly steal from patients is nothing compared to what some individuals steal from both patients and the fit, children and the aged. See oil, cement, mealie meals issues…. stealing everywhere.

  24. Am sure everybody knows that our hospital has made great improvements over the past years in terms of undertaking complicated operations. Members of the public would do well to be factual on this webside. Am referring to the case of a patient who is said to have been told to pay K50 000 000 for the operation to be done. That is overexaggeration and i challenge that client to report such a personnel to the administration either at UTH OR Ministry of health for quick action. Calling trained staff ma imbwa or anything wont help. The hospital is overwhelmed by the disease burden and health workers are trying to do their level best under the difficult situations but you who is just watching can find time to insult them. Please we need to change our mind set guys. Lets respect other people’s professions.

    • True we need to change our mindset and that shouldnt exclude the mindset of health workers…Health Professionals are considered noble because the profession is about saving lives but asking for a bribe is extreme…

  31. Let’s take this revelation seriously. For sure we cant afford to allow our poor sisters and brothers being subjected to this inhuman treatment. Mind u, patients who go to government health institutions are poor people who can hardly afford to book a taxi. Please Ba Kasonde and your people do something about this horrifying situation. This is more than Sodom and Gomora. On a similar note, think twice about your fruitless and endless workshops, which are chewing millions of our hard earned taxes. This money if saved can go a long way in making our hospitals and clinics healing havens we all hope to see.

  37. Am an employee of UTH and i dont think there could be a doctor who can single handedly undertake an operation alone. This is not sex. An operation requires a combination of different health care disciplinaries such as Theatre nurses, Anaesthetists, and surgeons including radiographers. There are times when patients require an open reduction with internal fixation in theatre where plates and pins may be required to be bought whn they run out in the hospital and patients are asked to buy if they can afford. There is a an arrangement also where by a surgeon can arrange for private practice with patients who do not want to wait as the list may be too long for them. These can be asked to pay for private surgery where the hospital gets a certain percentage as well as the surgical team. The operations are done outside normal govt working hours. I would be happy if the author sought clarification frm our public relations before turnishing the image of our hospital. Am sure they have the details of our surgeon and the ward where this patient is admitted. If it is true that few officers take advantage of the sick, the law will apply just like to any other criminal arround any place. The members of the public are urged to follow normal channels of communications available in UTH to avoid alarming the situation. We want people to be free with our Nurses and doctors in the wards where they are being admitted.

  39. I’ve also heard of similar demands. Right now there’s a patient in G ward who is supposed to pay K50,000,000 to have his broken bones fixed. Where are we headed to as a country? If it’s difficult to find K80,000 to buy a bag of mealie meal, where does one get a K50,000,000? Which bank can loan that money to a civil servant? Many deaths in our hospitals are premature deaths.
